Name: MooCall
Why Needed
- Complication during give birth
- Ensure the farmers can present when needed –
resulted in higher live birth rate
- No need to monitor or supervise livestock all the
time

Malaysia livestock industry is an important and integral part of the agricultural sector, providing
employment and supplying useful animal protein for the population. Based on a study
conducted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 2019, Malaysians consumed
54.75 kg of meat per year individually on average, the highest consumer in East Asia, second in
Asia behind South Korea with 55.9kg and in 13th ranking in the world.
However, Malaysia will continue to face a shortage of local beef dependent on imports, said
Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry. He
said Malaysia was forced to import livestock products from Thailand and Australia, as well as
frozen meat from India, due to the shortage. Malaysia has reportedly produced 52,000 tons of
beef worth RM169 million and imported beef worth RM1.14 billion annually to meet local
demand of approximately 191,000 tonnes.
“The shortage is not only experienced during festive seasons such as Raya Aidiladha. Unless
the production is increased, we will continue to import beef to meet the demand” - Datuk Seri
Tajuddin Abdul Rahman
The key point is that Malaysia's livestock industry wasn't really competitive due to low
productivity and the private sector remained silent on the development of the livestock industry.
Malaysia has to import 75-80 percent of beef requirements from different parts of the world to
meet the domestic demand. In order to resolve these concerns, the government and the private
sector must take into account the need to concentrate on growing the viable livestock population
through successful breeding services.
Taking advantage of the Internet of Things (IoT), it has opened up new ways of farming as well
as rearing livestock. In this context, IoT can be fully integrated with one of the technological
developments called Texting Cow. The life of the livestock requires a great deal of
administration. This includes the tracking of births, the monitoring of health (weighting, illness,
diseases and reproductive cycles), the recording of purchases of medications and feed.
Farmers can use mobile apps that track every animal individually in less than a minute. In the
past, these tasks had to be performed by mail or from a machine back at the farm. Saving time
and resources, this technology enables farmers to demonstrate compliance and also offers
efficient real-time control of herds.
How to use a Moocall Calving Sensor.
Firstly, the device needs to be charged overnight before using it for the first time.
Then log on to www.moocall.com/register and register the sensor in order to activate it.
After that, download and install the Breed Manager apps from Appstore into your device.
To turn on the sensor, press the power button. The led light will flash red, green and blue for 1
minute and the blinking blue light indicates the sensor is ready to use.Test whether the
sensors are correctly linked to your phone by pressing the power button twice and the blinking
light will change to green and a confirmation message will be sent to your phone.
For the fitting of the sensor, place the sensor on the tail at the opposite vulva. Put the strap
through the ratchet, close the moocall door and tighten the strap. Check the sensor by pulling
downward on the tail, if loose pull extra notch of the strap until it fits. Do not overtighten to
avoid false alarm and discomfort to the cow. When calving happens, the red light will flash,
and the system will send you a sms to let you know. Reset the moocal after calving by
pressing the power button for a few seconds and the light will change from red to blue.
Automatic resetting will occur after three hours. If calving does not happen in four days, the
system will send you a sms. Remove the sensor for four to five hours. The sensor needs to be
cleaned with damp cloth, the rubber lining will be removed and washed before use the sensor
to another cow.
To turn off the sensor, simply press and hold the power button for 10 second. A Pink light will
flash before powering off. The sensor then need to be after fully charged to ensure the
longevity of the product.
Advantages
There are a few significant advantages offered by Moocall Calving Sensor. Firstly, it gives
information through SMS text when the cow is approaching calving. Firstly, it provides
information through SMS text when the cow is approaching calving. Knowing when a cow goes
to the calve will enhance the survival of the calf, as assistance can be provided during difficult
calving. However it is difficult to determine calving time on the basis of visual signs alone. Using
technology to recognize cows in active labor will greatly reduce calf mortality and can increase
total number of livestock hence bring higher profit to your farm.
Apart from that, the breeders might not even have to employ too many workers to keep the
cows in the cage. This is because this technology has been shown to have more than 95%
accuracy information than farm employees. Moocall Calving Sensor will also ensure the best
start for your calf. It should make sure that the calf is in a good condition.
And if the calf demands milk from the mother of the cow, the device will be alerted and notify the
breeders directly. The interesting part of this technology is that if you save a cow, it pays for
itself. The last benefit of this technology is that the battery will last for up to 60 days in a good
network area. So, breeders don't need to think about recharging the Moocall Calving Sensor's
battery often.
Disadvantages
Apart from having advantages, the moocall devices also have disadvantages which is not good
to be heard for any ruminant livestock owner. To set up moocall devices require a good
coverage and internet line. For example one owner livestock production wanted to use the
devices to monitor their livestock but the place does not have a good and strong coverage of the
internet so the devices won’t work well or there must be a bit technical problem in providing
data or maybe the data can’t be taken properly because of the coverage.
The moocall also does not have a long-lasting battery; it can only be used for 60 day and need
to be recharged. For a big scale livestock owner to monitor all the devices until they need to be
recharged in 60 day is a quite challenging task because we could imagine the devices are only
for a small group of livestock but quite a big number of them. But if they could hire a worker and
have enough money to invest on paying the worker to monitor the devices is okay.
The devices data set was separated into a calibration data set and a validation data set. All the
data was already set in algorithms; it is only suitable for taking the data only for bovines or cows
only and not suitable for any other ruminant livestock. A total of 4,341 insemination records with
conception outcome information from 2,874 locations on 1,789 cows from 2009 to 2014 were
available.
Why Needed
Why is MooCall needed? This question might be asked by most people however, despite
various advantages this friendly technology also consists of few factors that make it more
essential for breeders and farmers. The brand new technology will reduce the risk of
complication during the birth of the cow. In fact, about 80% of all calves lost at birth are
anatomically normal. Most deaths are due to injuries or suffocation resulting from calving or
delayed calving. Thus, knowing when and how to assist can make a big difference in the calf
crop from year to year. The first step is recognizing a normal calving. With the presence of the
smart-timer technology, the breeders can make early preparations to ensure the smooth birth of
the new cattle. The system will ensure the farmers can present in time which resulted in higher
successful birth rates. It is also provided for a more labour-friendly environment as workers do
not need to monitor or supervise the condition of the livestock all the time.
