Sociology of the Economy

Economy- it refers to the structuring and functioning of the

development and utilization of human and natural resources in the
production, processing, distribution, and consumption of material
goods and services.

The Social Structure of the Economy

In subsistence economies, the family is the center of economic

activities and is simultaneously the production, processing, and
distribution unit. The family unit provides for most of its own needs
and seldom produces economic goods nor does it render economic
services beyond its minimal, essential needs.

Functions of the Economy

1. The economic system provides physical subsistence for a

society.
2. It generates, as well as incorporates, social changes for the
continuity of society.
3. The economy maintains a balance with the other social
systems and among its social subsystems in the production,

1
processing, distribution, and consumption of economic goods
and services.
4. The economic institution indicates the nature of social
stratification in the society, shows class and mobility differences
about status differentials, and reflects relative ranking, income
or skill level, an increase of executive and technical positions,
and their possible changes.

Sociology of Education

Education (Sociologists and Anthropologists) - the process, in school

or beyond, of transmitting a society’s knowledge, skills, values, and
behaviors.

- A deliberate, systematic, and sustained effort to transmit or

acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values.
- Refers to the organized transmission of a culture’s knowledge,
skills, and values from one generation to another.

Learning – is a product of socialization, in which culture is transmitted

from one generation to another.

Perspective of Education

1. Formal education – This is the “education system” with its

hierarchical structures and chronological succession of grades,
from primary to university.
2. Informal education – This is the lifelong process par excellence,
whereby each individual acquires attitudes, skills, values, and
knowledge through everyday experience.
3. Non-formal education- This comprises all those educational
activities that are organized outside the established formal
system, whether functioning separately or as an important part
of a broader activity, and designed to serve identifiable
clientele and educational objectives.

Goals and Functions of Education

1. Socialization – formal education is one way for many societies

to prepare newcomers for membership.
2. Cultural transmission – education is important for passing on
the social and cultural heritage of one generation to the next.
The knowledge, values, beliefs, and norms that adult members

2
in society think young members should learn are transmitted
partly through education.
3. Selection and Allocation to adult positions – complex societies
that do not pass on adult positions by simple inheritance need
a system for assigning people to various positions.
4. Knowledge generation – schools also affect people through
the knowledge they produce. Knowledge produces in
educational institutions is equally valuable to all members of
society.
5. Political and Social Integration – through education, countries
tend to lessen racial and political discrimination. Conflicts are
avoided. People are led to integrate themselves into the
mainstream of society.
6. Selecting talent – Through education, talents are selected,
classified, and further developed.
7. Teaching skills – various skills and competencies are identified
by the formal school system. These skills are based on the
needs of the individuals and of the entire community or
society.
8. Innovations – The primary task of educational institutions is to
transmit society’s knowledge, and part of that knowledge
consists of how new knowledge is to be sought.
