6a) 10g of hydrocarbon CxHy undergoes combustion to give 12.86g water and 17.10dm3 of carbon
dioxide gas. Calculate its empirical formula.

CxHy + [X+(Y/4)] O2 –> XCO2 + Y/2 H2O

Mole of carbon dioxide = 17.10 / 24 = 0.714 mol = Mole of Carbon in CxHy

Mole of water = 12.86 / 18 = 0.714 mol
Mole of H in CxHy = 0.714 x 2 = 1.428 mol
Ratio of H to C = 1.428 / 0.714 = 2
The empirical formula is CH2.

Advanced Level (2 marks each)

1) A student carefully pipets 25.0 mL of 0.525 M NaOH into a test tube. She places the test tube
into a small beaker to keep it from spilling and then pipets 75.0 mL of 0.155 M H2SO4 into another
test tube. When she reaches to put this test tube of acid into the beaker along with test tube of base
she accidentally knocks the test tubes together and their respective contents combine in the bottom
of the beaker. Is the solution formed from the contents of the two test tubes acidic or basic? What is
the pH of the resulting solution?

No. of mole of OH- = (25/1000) x 0.525 = 0.01313 mol

No. of mole of H+ = (75/1000) x 0.155 x 2 = 0.02325 mol
As No of mole of H+ > No. of mole of OH-
So it is acidic.

Mole of H+ in the solution = 0.02325 – 0.01313 = 0.01012 mol

Molarity of H+ = 0.01012 / (100/1000) = 0.1012 M
pH = -log (0.1012) = 0.995

2) What is the mass of Na2C2O4 present in the solution if 11.8 ml of 0.0448 KMnO4 solution is
required to neutralize it. (Hint: C2O42- could be oxidized to CO2)

Half equations:
C2O42- –> 2CO2 + 2e–
5e– + 8H+ + MnO4– –> Mn2+ + 4H2O

Overall equation:
5C2O42- + 16H+ + 2MnO4– –> 2Mn2+ + 8H2O + 10CO2

[Answer Key] Calculation Exercise – 元素の貓 – 免費dse化學練習 14/5/2021, 12:37 AM

No. of mole of KMnO4 = (11.8/1000) x 0.0448 = 0.000529 mol

No. of mole of C2O42- neutralised = (0.000529/2) x 5 = 0.00132 mol
Mass of Na2C2O4 = 0.00132 x (23 x 2 + 12 x 2 + 16 x 4) = 0.177g

3) A 0.8870 g mixture containing only NaCl and KCl was treated with AgNO3. The AgCl formed
had a mass of 1.913 g. Calculate the mass percentage of Na and K in the sample.

Mole of AgCl = 1.913 / (107.8 + 35.5) = 0.0133 mol

= Mole of NaCl + KCl

Mass of NaCl + Mass of KCl = 0.8870g

Let the no. of mole of NaCl in the sample be y, the no. of mole of KCl would be (0.0133-y).

[y x (23 + 35.5)] + [(0.0133 – y) x (39.1 + 35.5)] = 0.8870

58.5y – 74.6y + 0.99218 = 0.8870

y = 0.0065mol

Mass % of Na = [(0.0065 x 23)/0.8870] x 100% = 16.9%

Mass % of K = [(0.0068 x 39.1)/0.8870] x 100% = 30.0%

4) Twenty dietary iron tablets with a total mass of 22.131 g were ground and mixed thoroughly.
Then 2.998 g of the powder were dissolved in HNO3 and heated to convert all iron into Fe3+.
Addition of NH3 precipitated Fe3+ to Fe2O3 • 7H2O, which was ignited to give 0.264 g Fe2O3
(159.69 g/mol). What is the average mass of FeSO4 • 7H2O (278.01 g/mol) in each tablet?

No. of mole of Fe2O3 = 0.264/159.69 = 0.00165 mol

No. of mole of FeSO4 • 7H2O = 0.00165 x 2 = 0.00331 mol
Mass of FeSO4 • 7H2O reacted = 0.00331 x 278.01 = 0.9192g
Mass of FeSO4 • 7H2O in each tablet = [(0.9192/2.998) x 22.131] / 20 = 0.339g / tablet

5) A 0.4004g sample of CaCO3 is mixed with 15.00 mL of 2.000 M HCl. Distilled water is then
added to make 200.0 mL of solution Y. A 10.00 mL aliquot of solution Y is taken and titrated with
0.1100 M NaOH. How many mL of NaOH are used?

CaCO3 + 2HCl –> CaCl2 + H2O + CO2

Mole of CaCO3 = 0.4004 / 100.09 = 0.004 mol

Mole of HCl = (15/1000) x 2 = 0.03 mol
Mole of HCl remaining after reaction = 0.03 – (0.004 x 2) = 0.022 mol
Mole of HCl in 10mL aliquot = (0.022/200) x 10 = 0.001 mol
Volume of NaOH used = 0.001/0.1100 = 0.01dm3 = 10mL

6) A 1.1664 gram sample of M(OH)2 was mixed with 25.00 mL of 3.000 M HCl and enough water
added to make 100.0 mL of solution Z. A 10.00 mL aliquot of solution Z was taken and titrated
with 20.00 mL of 0.1750 M NaOH. What is the metal, M?

[Answer Key] Calculation Exercise – 元素の貓 – 免費dse化學練習 14/5/2021, 12:37 AM

M(OH)2 + 2HCl –> MCl2 + H2O

Mole of NaOH = (20/1000) x 0.1750 = 0.0035 mol = Mole of HCl in 10 mL aliquot

Mole of HCl in 100 mL solution Z = 0.0035 x (100/10) = 0.035 mol
Mole of HCl used to react with M(OH)2 = [(25/1000) x 3] – 0.035 = 0.04 mol
Mole of M(OH)2 = 0.04/2 = 0.02 mol

Let the molar mass of M be x.

1.1664 / (x + 17 x 2) = 0.02
x = 24.3
M is Magnesium.

7) Iron can react with chlorine gas to give two different compounds, FeCl2 and FeCl3. If 0.558 g of
metallic iron reacts with chlorine gas to yield 1.621 g of iron chloride, which iron compound is
produced in this experiment?

Mole of iron = 0.558/55.8 = 0.01 mol

Let the number of Cl be z.

1.621/(55.8 + 35.5z) = 0.01
35.5z = 106.3
z = 2.99
So, FeCl3 is produced.

8) An analysis of an amino acid gave the following data: 32.0% carbon, 6.7% hydrogen, 18.7%
nitrogen, and 42.6% oxygen. If 1 mole of it weighs 75g. Calculate the molecular formula of the
amino acid.

Let there be 100g of the amino acid.

C H N O
Mass 32 6.7 18.7 42.6
Mole 2.667 6.7 1.336 2.662
Ratio 1.99 5.01 1 1.99

The empirical formula would be C2H5NO2.

n x (12 x 2 + 5 + 14 + 16 x 2) = 75
n=1
So, the molecular formula would be C2H5NO2.

9) John has 5.6 x 1024 molecules of Helium gas to fill balloons at a ballgame. If each balloon holds

[Answer Key] Calculation Exercise – 元素の貓 – 免費dse化學練習 14/5/2021, 12:37 AM

No. of mole of He = 5.6 x 1024 / 6.02 x 1023 = 9.30 mol

Total volume of He = 9.30 x 24 = 223 dm3
No. of balloon filled = 223 / 1.5 = 148.8

So, he can fill 148 balloons.

10) 1.435g sample of dry CaCO3 and CaCl2 mixture was dissolved in 25.00mL of 0.9892M HCl
solution. What was the CaCl2 percentage in the original sample if 21.48cm3 of 0.9312M of NaOH
was used to titrate excess HCl?

After addition of HCl, all CaCO3 reacted and CaCl2 is remained.

No. of mole of NaOH = (21.48/1000) x 0.9312 = 0.02 mol = mole of excess HCl

CaCO3 + 2HCl –> CaCl2 + H2O + CO2

No. of mole of HCl reacted with CaCO3 = [(25/1000) x 0.9892] – 0.02 = 0.0047 mol
No. of mole of CaCO3 = 0.0047 / 2 = 0.0023 mol
Mass of CaCl2 in the mixture = 1.435 – (0.0023 x 100.09) = 1.204g
Percentage of CaCl2 in the mixture = (1.204/1.435) x 100% = 84.0%
