Going for a Bike Ride

Do you remember when you first rode a bike by yourself for the first time? Were you

scared? Excited? Curious? When I got on my bike for the first time, I was ready to see the world.

I wanted to see the plants and streets that I couldn’t see from the car. However, I wanted to make

sure that I ride safely. When trying something new it is great to have fun but you also have to be

safe and be cautious of other elements. At first, I was hesitant to leave my training wheels in the

garage, but when I went fast, I never looked back. I just hoped that there was never going to be a

day that I got hurt.

Years passed and I got really good at riding my bike. One day, my sister, my mom, and I

went on a bike ride. My mom just decided to walk, but me and my sister were riding our bikes.

At first, we were just riding up and down the street, but finally we left. It was the perfect day for

a bike ride; the sun was shining, it wasn’t too hot, and the wind was blowing. We didn’t go that

far, but we were just excited to be outside. My mom was on the right side of the street and my

sister and I were on the left side of the street. We wanted to go fast, so we went on the other side

of the street, so we wouldn’t bump into our mom.

We were about to reach a busy road so my sister and I had to cross the street to get to our

mom. The street we were crossing , I had crossed before, but my sister had never crossed a street

before. My mom was behind us on the other side and told us to stop at the crosswalk and to cross

the street carefully. I was always in front of my sister to lead the way. I had already passed the

crosswalk but my sister hadn't. My mom was watching us cross, but my sister decided to cross

the street immediately. My sister was young at the time and didn’t know you had to look both

ways to make sure there were no cars coming.

I remember the experience in slow motion. I see my sister crossing the street, as a huge

FedEx truck is flying down the street. The driver had earbuds in and was not paying attention to

anything. I hear my mom say, “Julia, STOP!” I jumped off my bike and pulled her out of the

street. My heart was pounding and I didn’t think at all, I just reacted. I knew that the truck was

not going to slow down, and my mom was on the other side of the street, so I was the only one

that could do anything. The driver didn’t even realize that he had almost run over a little girl.

This was not the only time a child was almost hit at this crosswalk. There was a blind

child that lived right next to the crosswalk and almost got hit by a vehicle. Now there is a stop

sign and a sign saying “ Blind Child.” This occurrence taught me to always look where I am

going, and to look out for others as well.
