The 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic is an ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease
2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov-2). It
has started from Wuhan, Hubei, China. The first case was confirmed on 1st December 2019. It
became public health emergency of international concern on 30th January 2020, and now it has
been reported from 199 countries by affecting approximately 748,066 people all around the
world, resulting approximately 35,388 deaths. In this serious lock down situation, we can cope it
up with Internet of Things (IoT). The Internet of things (IoT) is a system of interrelated
computing devices, mechanical and digital machines provided with unique identifiers (UIDs) and
the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-
computer interaction.

In addition to it, that mechanical and digital machines are all everyday objects that can be
connected to internet and recognized by other devices and contribute info to the database. It can
be fan, AC, airplane, car, coffee pot, microwave ovens, fridge etc. There was certainly
tremendous adoption of smart home technologies.  Seventy percent of people who purchased
their first smart home device believe they are more likely to purchase more, according to a Smart
Home Technology Survey. There are wearable technologies, smart cars, and it has also
transformed the way we do business.

The interconnection of devices within the “Internet of Things” (IoT) creates new data sources.
Companies can now better observe people’s choices and test the effectiveness of different
mechanisms to activate and retain more customers. It may also help policymakers overcome one
of the most frequent problems of policy design: the lack of personalized content. In this global
pandemic situation companies can take advantage of IoT to minimize the loss as the whole world
is facing financial crises and economies are going towards depression. Through the gathered
information they can analyze the consumer behavior and consumer needs. Because in hard times
or when the situation is not normal the behavior of consumer changes. Spending patterns of
consumer has changed, nowadays they do not spend money on outings, gatherings, dinners,
shoes, clothes and luxuries (e.g: jewelries, appliances, cars, etc.) because focus of consumers is
on medical services, medicines, food and other daily necessities. Many brands are using different
tactics and strategies to make better postion in the mind of consumers by advertising their
campaigns according to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Such as: tweaking their logos,
awaring people about precautions. Since, there is no cure for the virus. For example: Mc
Donalds, Coca Cola, Nike, Telenor, Lifebouy and many more.

Moreover, in these quarantine days we can get a huge benefit from it. Like, we can test ourselves
from home for coronavirus as it is not safe to go out in hospitals for checkup. Police can look
after people and roads in lockdown by drones cameras and CCTV cameras to keep them in
control or to keep eye on them so that they cannot move or travel from one place to another and
do not gather at one place. Through the collected information government can watch how many
family members are there in a house to provide them necessities. We can order food or other
necessities online by sitting at home.

Also, the Internet of Things has inevitably penetrated the healthcare industry, one that accounts
for billions of smart devices and their number keeps growing exponentially. The more progress
medical science and technology make, the higher the number and the variety of healthcare
devices rockets. The gadgets face constant modernization and enhancement along with evolving
consumer needs. As a consequence, the role of these appliances has increased: today, they not
only assist in the patient workup and disease treatment but also help prevent health problems and
encourage wellness. They provide the following benefits: remote patient health data monitoring,
reporting and abnormality alerting; virtual appliance management, regardless of their number;
time saving; device-to-analytics data stream automation; and remote equipment configuration,
the staff can tune home health monitoring devices or wearables remotely, eliminating the need
for patients to visit the hospital. So, in this global pandemic situation IoT devices can help
doctors to treat patients, because patients are so much in number that cannot be handled by
doctors as no one was prepared for this. Also, patients who are in quarantine and cannot get help
of people as no one is allowed to touch them directly, so they use IoT based devices to comfort
themselves and get help from them. And there are devices to check who has coronavirus and
who has not. Basically, they are detecting machines and they are also IoT based.

In a nutshell, Internet of Things (IoT) has helped a lot in this global pandemic situation.
Although, it is not established all over the world completely, but it is making life easier in major
parts of the world. Consumer behavior varies with the time and situation. In this case, IoT can
help in understanding the changing behavior of consumers and their needs.
