Differential Calculus I:

Review of elementary calculus, polar curves- angle between the radius vector and 10

Laws of motion: Frames of reference. Newton’s laws of motion; 1st law and its
completeness in describing particle motion, concept of inertial mass, 2nd law and its
limitations, 3rd law explanation with illustration.
Rotational motion: Angular velocity and angular momentum. Moment of inertia (MI)
of a rigid body, couple and torque. Parallel and perpendicular axes theorems.

Elasticity: Introduction- Stress and Strain, Hooke’s law, Expression for Young’s
modulus (y), Bulk modulus (k) and Rigidity modulus (n), Poisson’s ratio () and 8
relation between the Elastic constants (y, k & n).
Bending of beams – Expression for bending moment of a beam and Single cantilever
(derivation).
Maxwell’s equations: Fundamentals of vector calculus, Divergence and Curl of Static
electric field and magnetic field, Gauss’s divergence theorem (derivation) and Stoke’s
theorem (no derivation), Electrostatics: Coulomb’s law, differential form of Guass’s
law, Poisson’s and Laplace’s equation. Magnetostatics: magnetic force on a moving
charge, Lorentz’s force relation, Biot-Savart’s law and Faraday’s law of
Electromagnetic induction and lenz’s law. Mentioning of Maxwell’s equations.
II Numerical Problems. Electromagnetic waves: Wave equations in differential form in
free space (derivation using Maxwell’s equations). Plane electromagnetic waves in 8
vacuum and their transverse nature.
Shock waves: Definition of Mach number. Distinctions between acoustic, ultrasonic,
subsonic and supersonic waves. Description of a shock wave & its applications. Basics
of conservation of mass, momentum & energy. Derivation of normal shock relations
using simple basic conservation equations (Rankine – Hugonit equations).
Quantum Mechanics: Introduction to wave nature of particles, wave-particle
dualism, phase velocity and group velocity, theory of group velocity. Heisenberg’s
Uncertainty principle (no derivation), Applications-Non-existence of electrons in the
III nucleus, Wave function, time independent Schrodinger wave equation in one
dimension (derivation), Physical significance of wave function, Eigen values & Eigen 8
functions, Application of Schrodinger wave equation - For a free particle and particle
in one dimensional potential well of infinite height. Numerical problems.
Vibrations: Introduction, Free vibrations, Theory of Damped vibrations-cases of
under damping, over damping and critical damping, Forced vibrations. Resonance-
amplitude and sharpness of resonance. Numerical problems.
Fiber optics: Introduction. Propagation mechanism in optical fibers, Numerical
aperture (derivation). V-number, Types of optical fibers and mode of propagation.

Course Objectives: The students will be able to

 Familiarize with the freehand sketching of basic geometrical constructions in


Engineering Drawing for visualization of three dimensional objects.
 Apply the principles of orthographic projections to draw elevation, plan and profile views
of lines, planes and solids.
 Apply the principles of projection of lines to find solutions to practical problems involving
distances and inclinations
 Apply the fundamentals of solid geometry and develop lateral surfaces of solids.

UNIT - 1. Introduction to Computer Aided Sketching 2L+4P Hours

Introduction, Drawing Instruments and their uses, BIS conventions, Dimensioning and free hand
practicing. Computer screen, layout of the software, standard tool bar/menus and description of
most commonly used tool bars, navigational tools.

Co-ordinate system and reference planes. Definitions of HP, VP, RPP & LPP. Selection of
drawing size and scale. Commands and creation of Lines, Co-ordinate points, axes, square,
rectangle, polygons, circles, ellipse, text, move, copy, off-set, mirror, rotate, trim, extend, break,
chamfer, fillet, curves, constraints viz. tangency, parallelism, inclination and perpendicularity.

UNIT - 2.Orthographic Projections of points, straight lines and planes. 8L+16P Hours

Introduction, Definitions - Planes of projection, reference line and conventions employed,


introduction to four quadrants. Projections of points (problems are only from First quadrant),
Including Front View, Top View, Left View, Right view.

Introduction, Definitions Projections of right regular tetrahedron, hexahedron (cube), Prisms,


Pyramids of square, pentagon and Hexagon, cylinders and cones in different positions (No
problems on octahedrons, freely suspended solids and combination of solids).

UNIT - 4. Isometric Projection (Using Isometric Scale Only) 4L+8P Hours

Introduction, Isometric scale, Isometric projection of simple plane figures (keeping the
lamina on HP), Isometric projection of hexahedron(cube), right regular prisms, pyramids,
cylinders, cones, spheres, cut spheres and combination of solids (Maximum of 2 solids).

UNIT - 5. Development of Lateral Surfaces of Solids 4L+8P Hours

Introduction to Section planes and Sectional views, Development of lateral surfaces of right
regular prisms, cylinders,pyramids and cones resting with base on HP only (No problems on
lateral surfaces of trays, tetrahedrons, spheres and transition pieces).
