Risk Management Manual

Term Project
Identify and contact a sport or recreation organization and prepare a study of their risk
management policies and procedures following class guidelines. The following outline
may not be completely appropriate depending on the type of organization selected.
Some sections may be omitted or others may be added as necessary. If there are any
questions, please contact me.
Organization Description: Describe the background and give an overview of the
organization. Include the following:

1. the services or programs provided

2. the clientele served

3. the facility or facilities

4. the organizational structure - organizational chart

5. other pertinent information

Job Descriptions: Select at least three important positions from the

organizational chart and determine if they have a detailed, written job description for
each. If so, interview at least one person for each position and determine whether the
job description matches the job they are doing. Rewrite it if necessary to include safety
and risk management aspects of the position. Please identify your recommendations so
it will be apparent which are yours and which existed previously. If no written job
descriptions exist, interview the person (or people) in each position and develop a
written description of their job responsibilities.
Facility Risk Review:

1. Do an on-site inspection of the facility. A detailed list of all hazards and

safety concerns will be produced. These concerns will then be prioritized by
importance and a list of recommendations for alleviating each problem will be
generated. Bring a camera and take pictures (photos or slides) of hazards as well as
examples of good features of the facility.
2. A report will be written for the organization's administrators. This should include at
least some background information, the findings of the survey and a prioritized list of
safety problems with specific recommendations for addressing each. Include a
review of existing signage throughout the facility and recommend additional signage
needed.
3. A safety check list will then be developed for use in future inspections.
Also recommend a schedule for the periodic inspections.
4. If appropriate, study, critique and make recommendations for facility security and
access control.

Emergency Action Plan: Identify at least three emergency situations that are
most likely to occur and develop emergency response plans for each. Include all
documentation and forms that are to be used.
Participant Forms: Review or develop all pre-participation physical exam,
waivers, warnings, assumption of risk or other appropriate forms necessary for the
activities sponsored by the Agency.
Personnel: Review or develop policies and procedures for personnel as might
be found in the organization's personnel manual. Issues to consider include:

1. Hiring procedures
2. Initial and in-service training
3. Evaluation procedures
4. Discipline and firing procedures
5. Sexual harassment policy

Supervision: Select at least two activities that are relatively high risk in nature. Request
permission to observe the activities and study the supervision requirements of each.
Write a specific supervision plan for each activity including provisions for supervision
during an emergency.
Miscellaneous: Address other areas as appropriate.

1. Insurance coverage
2. Transportation policy
3. Maintenance schedules
4. Other

The final product should be a written report of your findings along with either specific
recommendations for the improvement of, or development of a risk management
manual if none exists.
The report will be presented to the class just as though it were being presented to
the administration of the facility.
