Course project for Distributed Generation Technology

Part I
1.1. Explain the theory of operation of DC switching regulator.
1.2. Calculate the value of inductance during continuous current conduction mode through the inductor.

Part II
In a software package PLECS, formulate the mathematical model of the regulator with control system.
(Switch model – ideal, model of control system – functional)
Using the model in Open-loop form:
2.1. Select the value of capacitance C of the output filter by the terms of maximum permissible ripple
(for the condition: D=0.5).
2.2. Get the current and voltage waveforms across the fundamental elements of the regulator during the
operative mode and starting conditions.
2.3 Draw control characteristic 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 (𝐷) for three values of input voltage of the regulator 𝐸𝑚𝑖𝑛 , 𝐸𝑛𝑜𝑚
, 𝐸𝑚𝑎𝑥 . Calculate the range of duty cycle D which provides stability to the output voltage.
2.4. Draw the input characteristic 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 (𝐸) of the regulator
2.5. Draw the load characteristic 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 (𝑅𝑙 ) [load range 𝑅𝑙 = ±50%]
2.6. Determine the harmonic contents in the output voltage of the regulator.

In closed loop system:

2.7. Draw magnitude plot and phase plot for the feedback system of the regulator.
2.8. Draw the input characteristic 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 (𝐸) of the regulator
2.9. Draw the load characteristic 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 (𝑅𝑙 ) [load range 𝑅𝑙 = ±50%] for different values of gain factor
of the feedback loop.
2.10. Draw the regulator- output voltage and current waveforms during instantaneous input voltage and
load current for different values of coefficients of feedback loop.

Part III
Calculate and select power semiconductor device for power switch of the regulator. By the assumption
of chosen power semiconductor device, find the requirements for the control circuitry of power switch.
In a software package PSpice, make corrections on above designed mathematical regulator model taking
consideration for the selected power semiconductor device and it’s control circuitry.
Later, for the open-loop system (𝐷𝑛𝑜𝑚 ):
3.1. Determine power loss in the switch of the regulator.
3.2. Find over-voltage and over-current in power semiconductor device during transient. Calculate the
parameters of snubber. Get the current and voltage waveforms in the switch after the snubber are used.
