INTRODUCTION AND PROJECT OVERVIEW

This project is totally about using a zener diode for a power supply as zener diode stabilizes the
constant voltage. I am using Multisim software to implement this project.

This basic purpose of this project is for the constant supply of voltage to electronic components.
Zener diode does that work as it works in reverse bias for the regulation purpose. Zener diode
work as normal diode in forward bias and work as voltage regulator which means it will
overcome the ripples in voltage and will make it stable to used as a supply voltage and can be
provided to the electronic components. Here we have used bridge rectifier circuit for conduction
in both half cycles and a capacitor to overcome the ripples.

LIST OF COMPONENTS WITH BRIEF OVERVIEW

1. AC Power Supply:
Ac supply is used to provide AC voltage to the circuit. The voltage provided through it is
120rms and 60Hz frequency.
2. Step Down Transformer:
Transformer is used to convert high voltage to low voltage and low voltage to high
voltage.
It is also used for the isolation purpose. Here we have used Step down Transformer that
step down the voltage coming from ac source and also working as a isolator to avoiding
damage to the components.
3. Diodes:
Diode is a semiconductor device which conducts current in one direction. It has one pn
junction, it conduct current in forward bias and does not conduct in reverse bias.
These four diodes are used for bridge circuit to create conduction in both positive and
negative half cycles in order to get a full wave rectification. Two diodes are forward
biased at a time.
4. Capacitor(470uF):
Capacitors are electronic components that store the charges. Here we have used a
polarized capacitor which overcomes the ripples in voltage and provide constant DC but
that current still contain some ripples.
5. Zener Diode:
Zener Diode is an electronic component which conduct in reverse bias. It work as a
voltage regulator and provide constant dc to the components and overcome the ripples
from ac current. So therefore it is used as a power supply because it has certain ratings to
provide the respective current or voltage to the components.
6. LED:
LED is abbreviated for “Light Emitting Diode.”. , is also an electronic semiconductor
component. Here we have used it to check whether we are getting a constant DC of
desired voltage, because it usually operated at 2V DC.

7. Oscilloscope:
Oscilloscope is an electronic instrument used to view the graphs and waveforms of
electronic/electrical signals. Here we have used it in order to check the waveform how much
constant DC we are getting.
8. Resistor:
Resistor is an electronic component which resists the flow of current. It offer opposition to the
flow of current.

METHODOLOGY AND WORKING

In the circuit first we are applying Ac voltage that will pas through transformer which will step
down the voltage.

After this we have used Full Wave Bridge Rectifier in which we have used four diodes. In these
diode two diodes forward bias at a time and conduct for the first half cycle, i.e. D1 and D4
forward bias and conduct for first half cycle.

And for 2nd half cycle diodes D2 and D3 forward bias and conduct for the other half cycle.

Then the voltage flow through the capacitor and capacitor charges and also overcomes the
ripples to some extent.

Then it flow through the resistor which is used because of surge current which may damage the
components. Then AC voltage passes through the zener diode where it overcome the ripple to
complete extent and provide a constant dc to the load with desired required voltage.

RESULT/CONCLUSION
Power Supply using Zener Diode

From above it is clear and we can see that we are applying AC input and getting constant DC at
the output.

From above we can conclude that zener diode is working as a power supply for the load LED.
