Allison 5 Speed 1000 Series

Adaptive Control Feature

The Allison 1000 Series transmission consists of five (5) clutches labeled C1 to C5. A combination of two (2)
clutches are required to attain torque path from input to the output of the transmission. The following chart
indicates the clutch combinations for each range.

Here are some tips on Diagnosis:

·If you are experiencing a harsh shift, it is possible the TCM is still learning how to adapt that shift, and simply
needs to be driven a bit more with the intention of performing more of the particular type of shift.

·It’s good trouble shooting practice to reset the adaptive values for that shift, back to its base
calibration level. This will automatically reset the TCM to fast adaptive mode. The vehicle should then be
driven to allow the TCM to “relearn” the shift. Many times this will correct the concern. It is possible to reset
individual shifts without affecting the other shifts.

·When replacing a failed transmission with a replacement unit, it is important to reset the TCM to base calibra-
tion and fast adaptive for all shifts. This can be done in one step with the scanner. If this is not done, the TCM’s
adaptive values will still be at the setting that it learned for the old transmission and will be in slow adaptive
mode.

Technical Bulletin #1005
Transmission: 4-AT
Subject: Delayed or No Reverse
Application: 99 & up Subaru
Issue Date: May, 2006

4-AT
Delayed or No Reverse
It's not uncommon for the Bonded Low/Reverse piston to fail due to shrinkage. When the Low/Reverse piston
fails, a delayed or no reverse condition will occur. During the rebuild, always replace this piston with a new one.

Technical Bulletin #1006
Transmission: A670/A413
Subject: No Movement Before or After Overhaul
Application: Dodge / Chrysler
Issue Date: May, 2006

A670/A413
No Movement Before or After Overhaul
You may encounter a no movement or a no engagement concern while working on an A670/A413/30TH/31TH
transmission may be due to a stripped transfer gear and transfer shaft. It is recommended to fully disassemble
and inspect the transfer gear and transfer shaft for stripped splines when encountering a “ no movement” or “
engagement” concern or when overhauling the transmission assembly.

Subject: 1-2 Bind Up
Application: Audi A6
Issue Date: May, 2006

ZF5HP19FL
1-2 Bind Up
Some Audi A6 vehicles with ZF5HP19FL may have a 1-2 bind up condition that occurs mainly during heavy
throttle acceleration. This condition may be caused by low oil level or a faulty filter seal. Using ATRA Technical
Bulletin # 768, make sure the oil level is correct. If necessary, remove oil pan and filter to check seal.

Application: BMW
Issue Date: May, 2006

ZF5HP19
2-3 Flare
Some vehicles with the ZF5HP19 transmission may have a 2-3 flare. This condition may occur after an
overhaul. This may be caused by incorrectly placed orifices in the valvebody. DO NOT rely on the orifice color.
Measure each orifice to be sure the correct one is installed. Use the following illustration to correctly place the
plastic orifices.

No 3rd Gear
If the 2-3 Capacity Modulator Valve is installed backwards, the Direct Clutch will not apply. This will cause a
no 3rd gear condition. The illustration below shows the correct way to install the valve.

ZF5HP19FL
No or Late Upshift Cold
Many 1990 and later BMW vehicles will have late upshifts when cold. This is a normal computer shift strategy
for faster engine and emission device warm-up. This condition should be considered normal operation. If you
suspect further problems or if this condition lasts longer than 10 minutes, check for trouble codes and monitor
shift solenoid signals.
