Introduction
Study shows that there is a very wide variation in the characteristics of different soils. A number
of physical tests and standard procedures have been developed to measure the materials
performance.
Soil tests are needed for determining of strengths or supporting values of soils may be divided in
to two groups. One of these tests is used in foundation investigations and is concerned with the
load carrying capacity and rate and amount of consolidation in soils that support. The other
strength type of test is designed to measure the supporting power of disturbed sample as
recompacted under standard procedures to set layer thickness for pavement system. Most of the
tests are performed in the laboratories of the various highway agencies have come to be more or
less routine in nature and are conducted in accordance with the methods of test established by
AASHTO and ASTM.
Generally, to permit the student to obtain a better concept of the various test commonly
conducted in highway materials, this manual has been prepared.
