DESCRIBE:

In the photograph you can see that it is in colour and black and white, portrait, rectangular, digital, eye level
angle, slow shutter speed, low aperture, deep depth of field, low contrast, rule of thirds and captures me looking
at my phone.

EXPLAIN:
I chose for this photograph to be portrait because it forces the audience to focus on my facial expression and it
also emphasises the notion of isolation, which is how I feel after the situation that has happened to me.
Secondly, you can identify that this image was shot using a digital camera due to the crisp look of the
photograph and I also used an aperture of f/9, a shutter speed of 1/13 and I adjusted the contrast to -3 1/3 to
provide a darker atmosphere within the image therefore, it would terrify the audience as they wonder what could
go wrong. Furthermore, inside of the phone case is a Disneyland Paris ticket which highlights how innocent I
really am and despite all what has happened to me, I am desperate to cling on to any hope of regaining my
innocence due to the fact Disney has positive connotations of happiness and joy. Lastly, the camera has been
positioned at an eye level angle to not only set the scene but also demonstrate how what I have done is still my
“secret” and nobody else who has authority has found out yet.

ANALYSE:
Through experimentation, I edited the photograph so that my face was in black and white and the other elements
of the photograph was in colour because not only did I want to create a physical representation that illustrates
the quick pace at how my innocence has disintegrated through the lack of colour in my face, but I also wanted to
show that there is hope for me to regain the innocence as the background is in colour. Interestingly, I made sure
that my hands were still in colour to demonstrate that there is hope for me to regain the innocence I once had as
my hands been in touching distance of the Disneyland Paris ticket. Moreover, hands share connotations of
strength which makes the audience have hope that I will be able to regain some childlike attributes back. You
could also argue that because I used a low contrast (-3 1/3), the colour that you can see in the photograph is
muted therefore, it is inevitable that I am not going to be able to learn from this situation easily. Secondly, rule
of thirds is applicable to this photograph as I am not in central of the photograph which could be done to suggest
that I am slowly losing the balance in my life that I once had, even my facial expression depicts that I am feeling
quite gloom about the whole situation and I am eager to find distractions in my life – such as glancing at my
phone. Furthermore, I believe if I used a shallow depth of field it would have not made the viewers acknowledge
the colour used in the background and may have assumed that the use of black and white was to create a dark
atmosphere to the photograph, without acknowledging how much the contrast of colours help emphasise the
meaning, Lastly, I would print this image large as it creates a group experience for the audience to be involved
in, as they immerse through the narrative.

EVALUATE:
I believe the most effective technique used in this photograph is the contrast of colours because it leads the
audience to question how I feel as the colour has literally drained out of my face. However, I think to improve I
could have experimented with shutter speed as, perhaps, if the photograph was blurrier, it would create the
impression that I am physically and mentally unstable therefore, making the audience have sympathy. Overall, it
is obvious that this photograph was influenced by Aaron Schuman as I have added text within the image that
provides further context for the audience however, I feel you can’t identify that I was inspired by Duane Michals
due to the fact I have not started my series with an establishing shot as this photograph is zoomed in.

DESCRIBE:
In the photograph you can see that it is in black and white, portrait, rectangular, digital, high angle, medium
shutter speed, low aperture, deep depth of field, low contrast and captures me mid-talking.

EXPLAIN:
I chose for this photograph to be portrait because it emphasises the notion of isolation, which is how I feel after
the situation that has happened to me and it also draws attention to the fact that this photograph was captured in
a small room as you can see the corner of it in the background. Secondly, you can identify that this image was
shot using a digital camera due to the crisp look of the photograph and I also used an aperture of f/9, a shutter
speed of 1/60 and I adjusted the contrast to -3 1/3 to highlight the dark atmosphere surrounding the photograph.
Furthermore, the fact I am wearing a hoodie gives negative connotations of mystery and danger as if I am hiding
from something or someone which could either scare the audience or make them question why I am wearing
one. Lastly, the camera has been positioned at a high angle to not only make me look vulnerable but to also
illustrate the viewpoint of a parent, demonstrating the authority they have and signifies how they view their
child.

ANALYSE:
Through experimentation, I have not only made the photograph black and white, but I have also explored with
blurring objects out. As you can see, I have blurred my face out to highlight to the audience that this photograph
is taken from a parents’ perspective who is struggling to recognise their daughter as in their eyes, she has always
been their “innocent girl”. Other techniques that emphasise that this photograph is from a parents’ viewpoint is
the use of a high angle, to illustrate that my parents are shouting at me and making me feel small and weak for
my actions. However, you can identify that I am rebelling against them as although you can’t see in detail my
facial expressions, you can see that I have my mouth open (as if I am mid-talking) and I have direct address with
them which allows the audience to find out more about me as I seem to deal with problems through being
rebellious to my parents. Furthermore, the audience are forced to share the same viewpoint as a parent which
may make them feel uncomfortable as they take on an authoritative position or it could make them feel powerful
as if they can take control of the narrative. Although I used an average shutter speed of 1/60, by moving my
hands while the photograph was being capture, I managed to make my hands appear blurry therefore, it makes
the audience think they have intruded within a heated argument. Interestingly, the framing of the photograph not
only demonstrates the smallness of the room, but it also reinforces the notion of innocence once again as in the
background, we can see teddy bears on the windowsill. Due to the camera angle, the teddy bears look more
superior than me which suggests that the idea of regaining innocence will always be on my mind however, it is
unclear whether I will reach it or not which makes the audience nervous.

EVALUATE:
I believe the most effective technique used in this photograph is the high angle viewpoint as it clearly signifies a
parent’s perspective as I look vulnerable and small. However, I think to improve I could have experimented
with depth of field as if I used a shallow depth of field, it would have drawn the audience’s attention to me
therefore, perhaps, a more accurate representation of the perspective of a parent as they are only concerned
about their child and nothing else. Overall, it is obvious that this photograph was influenced by Aaron Schuman
as I have added text within the image that provides further context for the audience and I also believe you can
identify that I was influenced by Duane Michals as he used blurry figures in his photographs to demonstrate
movement, similarly how my hands are blurred to portray movement as well.

DESCRIBE:
In the photograph you can see that it is in black and white, portrait, rectangular, digital, high angle, slow shutter
speed, low aperture, deep depth of field, low contrast and captures me putting my middle finger up.

Furthermore, the fact I am putting my middle finger up and wearing a hoodie gives negative connotations that I
am argumentative and threatening, which may change the audience’s perceptions on me. Lastly, the camera has
been positioned at a high angle to not only make me look vulnerable but to also illustrate the viewpoint of a
parent, demonstrating the authority they have and signifies how they view their child.

ANALYSE:

the use of a high angle, to illustrate that my parents are shouting at me and making me feel small and weak for
my actions. However, you can identify that I have a rebellious personality as my middle finger is not blurred
which could imply that my parents are used to seeing me rebel in this way therefore, it is something they
recognise instantly. Not only does it depict me as being rude, but it also acts as being a powerful mechanism due
to the fact the high angle makes me look weak so ultimately, I have to rebel in some way to make me look
stronger than them. Perhaps, if I moved my hand while the photograph was being captured, it would emphasise
the ongoing notion of innocence as it would reflect the unstable mindset of my parents as if they don’t want to
believe how I have become therefore, reality becomes distorted. It may have also depicted that I am
uncomfortable with how I have become rebellious and rude, so my actions also look unrecognisable from my
viewpoint as well as my parents. You can also see that I have my mouth open (as if I am mid-talking) and I have
direct address with them which not only makes the audience uncomfortable, but it also illustrates the amount of
strength I have as I am able to stare directly at my parents without fear.

EVALUATE:
I believe the most effective technique used in this photograph is the high angle viewpoint as it clearly signifies a

as I have added text within the image that provides further context for the audience and I also believe you can’t
identify any influence from Duane Michals as it is very similar to the previous photograph however, the
narrative has moved on in the duration.

DESCRIBE:
In the photograph you can see that it is in black and white, portrait, rectangular, digital, high angle, fast shutter
speed, low aperture, deep depth of field, low contrast and captures me with my hands on top of my head.

EXPLAIN:
I chose for this photograph to be portrait because it emphasises the notion of isolation, which is how I feel after
the situation that has happened to me and it also draws attention to the fact that this photograph was captured in
a small room as you can see the corner of it in the background. Secondly, you can identify that this image was
shot using a digital camera due to the crisp look of the photograph and I also used an aperture of f/9, a shutter
speed of 1/100 and I adjusted the contrast to -3 1/3 to highlight the dark atmosphere surrounding the
photograph. Furthermore, the fact I have put my hands on top of my head suggests that I am stressed about how
this situation has spiralled out of control, which may make the viewers feel sympathy towards me or they may
think I am acting pathetically, depending on how they interpretated the pragmatics of the previous photograph.
Lastly, the camera has been positioned at a high angle to not only make me look vulnerable but to also illustrate
the viewpoint of a parent, demonstrating the authority they have and signifies how they view their child.

ANALYSE:
Through experimentation, I have edited the photograph so it is in black and white because from a parent’s
perspective, when their child does something of an inappropriate nature, they may view their child’s life as
‘dull’ and will feel that there is no hope for them to move on from what they has done. Also, the fact I am facing
away from the camera suggests that there has been development in the narrative as you can no longer see my
face, implying that I feel I have nothing left to say to my parents. You can also imply that I am stressed and
worried about how this situation may evolve due to the fact my body language depicts me putting my hands on
my head, potentially I am worried if anybody else finds out about what I have done. Furthermore, you could
argue that because I have indirect address with the audience, it may be a sign of guilt as I struggle to not only
face my parents but also a “wider audience” (e.g friends) however, this photograph can also be interpretated as
another attempt to regain my innocence as I look at my teddy bears on the windowsill – wishing that I could
“turn back time” as suggested in the text included with the photograph. For this photograph, I used a shutter
speed of 1/100 which helps reinforce that my parents are no longer in the room and that I am now taking time to
reflect on not only what I have said to my parents, but also the situation as a whole. Despite the fact that my
parents have gone out the room, the high angle remains which suggests that I still feel their powerful presence
over me.

EVALUATE:
I believe the most effective technique used in this photograph is the high angle viewpoint as it emphasises how
no matter where I go, I will always feel that my parents are watching me. However, I think to improve I could
have experimented with shutter speed as, although, a fast shutter speed helped portray the movement of the
narrative, a slower shutter speed would have created a visual representation of the unstable mindset I have at the
moment. Overall, it is obvious that this photograph was influenced by Aaron Schuman as I have added text
within the image that provides further context for the audience and I also believe you can’t identify any
influence from Duane Michals as I never explored with a slower shutter speed because, if I did, it would have
created blurriness however instead of illustrating movement, it would have illustrated the personal battles facing
me.
