The prices of essential foods are remaining

high and unstable day by day

Onion is an essential food spice for cooking in our country. But the onion prices are
increasing day by day in the markets.
Although the onion prices began falling after hitting a high of around 250 per kilogram, the
onion prices have increased again since the beginning of the week for supply shortage.
Yesterday we found that the onion was sold up to 240 taka per kilogram by the wholesalers and
retailers. Onion prices also grown yesterday for the lack of availability at the bazars of onion
producing region Pabna.
Similarly, we didn’t find any vegetable below 40 tk in weight or in piece except old potato and
papaya. For this reason, many people don’t able to buy their essential foods.
The vegetable cultivation had suffered due to rainfall in October and the effect of Cyclone
Bulbul earlier this month. As a result, lots of vegetables were destroyed by natural disaster. It is
also one of reasons for increasing the prices of essential foods.
Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) and Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM)
informed that the prices of edible oil, flour, garlic and lentil also soared over the last two weeks.
Now people are bearing the brunt of the high prices of the essential foods. It is a critical situation
for middle class and poor people.
Even the winter vegetables are started arriving in the markets. But the prices of vegetable are too
high for people in low and fixed incomes. In this situation, the government of Bangladesh must
take step for controlling the prices of essential foods. This is a big challenge for the government
of Bangladesh.
