Rationale

The Philippines is a progressing country. The country’s industry continues to grow

and together with its agriculture industry growing rapidly. An urgency to meet the needs of
an individual would be a competitive advantage in the industry. This part of the study
discusses the vitality of knowing the distribution channel present in the distribution of onions
and its impact on the pricing of onions to the vendors in Carbon Market.

The Carbon Market is the largest public market in Cebu City. It is the oldest public

market in the Central Visayas region. Carbon Market sells a variety of commodities,

including fresh goods, fruits, vegetables, dry goods and housewares.

An essential ingredient in Filipino food, onions' price last month reached 700 pesos

per kg. Some of the factors that may have contributed to the soaring prices include inflation,

smuggling, price gouging, and a lack of the vegetable. In the Philippines, onions are more

expensive than beef. Restaurants have reduced their use of this key component of Filipino

cuisine due to scarcity and increasing pricing. NPR reported that 17,000 metric tons of onions

are consumed monthly in the Philippines. Some have compared the skyrocketing prices of

onion to those of "gold" since it is being smuggled into the nation. (Sanchez, 2023)

Onions now cost more than meat in the Philippines. As the country hits near-

unprecedented levels of inflation sparked by natural disasters and a global fuel crisis, the

pantry staple is in high demand at even higher prices. Since December 2022, people have

been posting prices of onions online and even sharing how they’ve been able to bring onions

in from abroad. The government has been cracking down on supposed "onion smuggling" as

it attempts to bring prices down through imports. (Brody, 2023)

To be able to determine the distribution channels used by the vendors in the Carbon

Market, improvements in the new distribution channel is needed. A huge factor in measuring
these improvements is the impact of distribution channels on the pricing of onions. In order to

fully prove the existence of these improvements, a cause and effect between the different

types of distribution channels used by the vendors and to the pricing of onions.
