I. COURSE OBJECTIVES:

[1] To understand the translation of the design into built reality and the predicament of a
real site
conditions.
[2] To understand the tangible integration of design, structure, services, etc.
[3] To explore concepts of architectural detailing and working drawings

II. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Introduction
The aim of the digital design studio for this semester would be to experiment on the design
aspects in residential architecture with the end aim of providing Good for Construction
Drawings (GFC). The course will introduce the student to a logical workflow of construction
drawings. These construction drawings are called working drawings in common parlance.
Working drawings are how architectural designs are communicated to the building industry
that is, building codes regulatory authority, product manufacturers, suppliers, fabricators,
and others. They are the backbone of any construction project. These should be drawn with
utmost perfection for the efficient execution of the design project.
The studio continues with the site from the previous studio that is ‘Institutional design’ (fall
semester 2020-21). The present studio would develop the residence for the Director of the
Institute design for which was developed in the previous studio. The students would be
given a time of 3 weeks to complete the conceptual design process and produce the
preliminary presentation drawings. Once they are approved of their concept, they can start
working on the technical aspects of the project. It is of utmost importance that the regional
context, climatic component be followed throughout the design process. The use of
sustainable materials is required and should be integrated from the starting of the design
process. Landscape strategy and building services should be integrated from the initial
stages of the design and should be an inherent part of it.
The Site
A site of 500 square meters is available for construction of this residence which ought to be
a 3 BHK house. Ground coverage would be a maximum of 50%. The site should be located in
the vicinity of the main access road. The structure can go up to G+2. The architectural style
of the residence should be in context with the site location, terrain conditions, climatic
consideration, and ecological restrictions (if any). The design should make use of local
materials and adhere to the principles of sustainable construction.
Intent of Studio
The process of architectural design comprises of three main stages – Concept development,
design development, and design realization. In the architectural curriculum, when all other
design studios predominantly cover the first two stages, this course emphasizes to equip
students with technical and technological intellect to formulate GFC drawings that serve as
the core basis of any efficient design. The process would be structured in the following
phases wherein each phase, the design gets infused with more technical values. This
approach would develop integrated technical drawings and help students to realize the
symbiotic relationship between architecture and building sciences.

II. COURSE PREREQUISITE (S): ARC4001

III. COURSE CO-REQUISITE (S): NIL
IV. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
SLOs – 2,6,13
[2] Having a clear understanding of the subject related concepts and contemporary issues
[6] Having an ability to design a component or a product applying all the relevant standards
and with realistic constraints
[13] Having cross-cultural competency exhibited by working in teams

V. EXPECTED COURSE OUTCOME:

[1] Understanding the nomenclature, graphics symbols, formats, conventions, and
compositional clarity associated with working drawings.
[2] Understanding architectural detailing and planning refinements including engineering
systems integration
[3] Produce construction drawings for a specific project.

VI. COURSE EVALUATION:

The studio is divided into several progressive stages of evaluation which are as follows:
Stage 1 – Design concept formulation for the residence and preparation or architectural
presentation drawings.
Stage 2 – Preparation of technical architectural drawings (Plans, elevations, sections, details,
opening schedules, roof drainage, and others). The CAD drawings at this stage should reflect
a clear indication of appropriate pen thickness, dimensions, spatial planning according to
standards, fenestrations, roofline, shading techniques, ducts, OTS, level differences, Section
line, and required annotations.
Stage 3 – Integration of structural component – Location and position of columns, beam-
line, center-line marking, footing drawing, and plinth beam drawing, details of composite
structures jointing details, trusses, shingles, rafters, and trusses, etc.
Stage 4 – Integration of service – Development of electrical layouts, plumbing, and sewage
lines, HVAC layers, etc.
Stage 5– Integration of building system – Fire services (both active and passive
components), security services- Sensors, access control, and CCTV components, etc. (at
residence level)
Stage 6 – Landscape and site services – Material plan, Grading plan, stormwater drainage-
surface and subsoil drainage, inner roads, vegetation, etc. This would be done for the whole
site including where the institutional buildings are also located.
These would be divided into the following assessment levels:
