The concept "outsourcing" came from the American Glossary 'outside resourcing' and it dates
back to at least 1981. Outsourcing sometimes, involves transferring employees and assets
from one firm to another. Outsourcing is also the practice of handing over control of public
services to private enterprise.
The evolution of Outsourcing has led to a wide variety of Outsourcing services today. With a
wide list of Outsourcing services, it is important in learning - What is outsourcing, to uncover
what the different types exactly are. Therefore, in this section, types of Outsourcing will be
discussed. In this chapter, outsourcing will refer specifically to transport and warehousing
functions. Its content includes reasons why companies outsource, how to choose a third-party
logistics organization (3PLO), who the main players are, advantages-disadvantages, and how
to be successful in working with a 3PLO.
