Some people say that spending lengthy periods of time helps young people to develop

Nowadays youngsters are often encouraged by their parents to leave their family home in order to get some
further knowledge about life. While there are those who consider this experience is highly beneficial for
them, some believe it may not always be a good idea.

On the one hand, being far from parents’ comfort and protection does help the young to evolve. It provides
them the opportunity to live on their own terms and make decisions without parent’s interference. Thus,
they become more confident and self-reliant. Furthermore, being away from home makes young people
acquire skills which they will find useful in later life. For example, learning how to manage time, finances
and different activities on their own might prove to be of great importance in their future professional and
private life.

On the other hand, it cannot be denied that the young not living with their families could find themselves in
circumstances which may adversely affect their lives. In the absence of parental supervision, they are more
likely to fall under bad influence due to their inexperience. What is more, the may even engage in some
dangerous activities, such as drug or alcohol abuse. Besides this, staying home brings many benefits in
terms of family support and emotional bonding. If one stays away from home for a long time, some of the
closeness with other family members is bound to be lost.

To sum up, leaving home for a longer time has many positive effects, but it can also be a problem if a
person is not mature or responsible enough. In my opinion, everyone should try to be on their own for a
while in order to discover their possibilities and potentials.
