Script:

Radio presenter: Welcome everybody to another edition of “Life Today”. In our studio we have Ronnie
Hancock, the world-famous Olympic athlete. Ronnie, thanks for being with us today.

Ronnie: Hi Lisa. Thanks for inviting me. I listen to your programme every day so it’s a pleasure for me to be
here. It’s my first time on the radio so I’m a bit nervous.

Radio presenter: Don’t worry! Relax! Last week we were talking about diets and staying healthy while
travelling. We had a nutritionist in the programme who gave us some advice on how to stay fit during holidays.
We’d like to know what you do to stay fit when you travel.

Ronnie: Sure. Well, I travel a lot, especially because of my job. In fact, I’ve travelled to many places and met
fantastic people from all over the world thanks to athletics. Staying healthy and exercising when I’m travelling
for work is easy. It isn’t so easy, though, when I’m on holiday with my family or my friends.

Radio presenter: Absolutely! I run three times a week but every time I go on holiday, I can’t find the time to
do it and then when I come back, I feel awful because I have lost some training. How do you do it?

Ronnie: Well…first of all, I pay attention to what I eat so that I don’t change my diet a lot. And secondly, I try
to make some time during the day to go running or to go the gym, if there’s one where I’m staying. And then, I
do little things that will help me to keep moving. For example, I take the stairs whenever possible. I walk
instead of taking a bus or a taxi. I borrow a bike from the hotel I’m staying at and use it to travel longer
distances.

Radio presenter: I see…I hadn’t thought of that. I’ll keep that in mind for my next trip! And what about your
family? Do they do the same things?

Ronnie: Well…not really. My wife and my daughter don’t do much exercise so we usually have some
problems when I tell them that I want to go somewhere on foot because they prefer taking a taxi or even
renting a car!

Radio presenter: Mmm…that must be difficult to solve!

Ronnie: Not really. We’ve reached an agreement over the years and every time we want to go sightseeing,
we usually do one part on foot or by bike and then another part by car. After all, I also need to rest a little bit!

 Writing task
Students must write between 100 and 120 words. If they do not reach the minimum number of words or
exceed the word limit by more than ten words, 2 marks will be deducted from the score achieved.

Free production: General impression mark scheme

Band 5 20 – 18
For a Band 5 to be awarded, the candidate’s writing has a very positive effect on the target reader. The
content is relevant* and the topic is fully developed. Information and ideas are skillfully organised through
a range of cohesive devices, which are used to good effect. A wide range of complex structures and
vocabulary is used effectively. Errors are minimal, and inaccuracies which do occur have no impact on
communication. Register and format are consistently appropriate to the purpose of the task and the
audience.

Band 4 17 – 15
For a Band 4 to be awarded, the candidate’s writing has a positive effect on the target reader. The
content is relevant* and the topic is developed. Information and ideas are clearly organised through the
use of a variety of cohesive devices. A good range of complex structures and vocabulary is used. Some
errors may occur with vocabulary and when complex language is attempted, but these do not cause
difficulty for the reader. Register and format are usually appropriate to the purpose of the task and the
audience.

Band 3 14 – 12
For a Band 3 to be awarded, the candidate’s writing has a satisfactory effect on the target reader. The
content is relevant* with some development of the topic. Information and ideas are generally organised
logically, though cohesive devices may not always be used appropriately. A satisfactory range of
structures and vocabulary is used, though word choice may lack precision. Errors which do occur do not
cause difficulty for the reader. Register and format are reasonably appropriate to the purpose of the task
and the audience.

Band 2 11 – 9
For a Band 2 to be awarded, the candidate’s writing has a negative effect on the target reader. The
content is not always relevant. Information and ideas are inadequately organised and sometimes
incoherent with inaccurate use of cohesive devices. The range of structures and vocabulary is limited
and/or repetitive, and errors may be basic or cause difficulty for the reader. Register and format are
sometimes inappropriate to the purpose of the task and the audience.

Band 1 8 – 6
For a Band 1 to be awarded, the candidate’s writing has a very negative effect on the target reader. The
content is often irrelevant. Information and ideas are poorly organised and there is minimal use of
cohesive devices. The range of structures and vocabulary is severely limited and errors frequently cause
considerable difficulty for the reader. Register and format are inappropriate to the purpose of the task and
the audience.

Band 0 5 – 0
For a Band zero to be awarded, there is either too little language for assessment or the candidate’s
writing is totally irrelevant or illegible or they did not write anything.
