seeing wife for first time in a
decade thanks to 'bionic eye'
A blind man from Minnesota has described his joy at seeing his wife for the first time
in a decade after (0)_________
doctors implanted a bionic eye on him.
A video released by the clinic showed Allen Zderads surprise and excitement as he
turned to his wife, Carmen, after he put on sunglasses connected to the implant. It
was just the most wonderful moment, said Mr Zderad, 68, a retired chemist who lost
his sight because of an incurable eye (1)_________.
I turned to where Carmen was sitting and for the first time in 10 years, I could see a
shape.
He raised out his (2)_________ to touch her face and then Carmen and Allen burst
into tears as family and friends cheered and clapped.
Mr Zderads new vision is not normal as he only sees flashes of black and white light

Its like a radar that I have to understand and interpret, he said. But recognising his
wife was no challenge. Its easy, he explained, as shes the most

Although he cant see finer details, such as people's faces, his quality of life has
already dramatically improved. The technology has already allowed him to identify a

Mr Zderad has always suffered sight problems because of his degenerative eye
disease, and began to lose his sight around 20 years ago. For the past 10 years, he

Dr Raymond Iezzi Jr, the ophthalmologist who conducted the procedure, said: Its
very unusual for a scientist to see that the results of what weve worked on for years

Sight: It is the perception of light.


It allows us to create an image of what the world looks (0)___
