 Reading
Mark has been reading about people who decided to change careers. Read part of
an article he’s found and do the exercises below, please.

CHANGE, CHANGE, CHANGE

Admit it: there are days when you find yourself at the office daydreaming about an entirely
different career. You’re not alone. In fact, according to a recent survey, nine out of ten Britons
have found themselves thinking of changing careers. Although people have changed careers
since the beginning of time, it’s become more and more common among millennials - those who
were born towards the end of the 20th century and are now in their late twenties or thirties.

Meet three of these millennials who decided to take the plunge and change their careers.

Nikki M. Lee, 32, had a successful career of over 12 years in IT until one day
she realised the work she was doing wasn’t helping the world become a
better place. She says her biggest challenge was moving out of her comfort
zone, having to learn something new on a daily basis, and having the
courage to follow her dreams. She now encourages people to have a clear
vision of what career they want and what they want from it.

Jeff Lear was 37 years old when he decided to quit his job at an
advertising company and set up his own business with a friend. He
says the biggest challenge was to start being his own boss and
sharing everything with his partner. He kept a ‘day job’ for a while,
managing events related to software businesses, until he was able
to see his new company make a profit. He says having that other job
made him feel more confident in case his new job wasn’t as
successful as he expected. He says that new things can always be
scary. He advises other people to research thoroughly their next
move to avoid any surprises, and make sure that the next move will be something that will provide
them with the income they need.

Kate McKeon, 31, went from management consultant to teacher in her

early 30s, and is now making another transition as founder of a mobile
educational game company. She says she had to struggle for the first two
years because everything was new to her and she had to learn lots of
things on the go. She admits having days in which she was really worried
and regretted her decision, but she says that the only solution was to keep
reminding herself of why she had made such a choice. Her top advice for
people in a similar situation is to keep their goals in mind at all times and to
remind themselves over and over again what it is about the new field or job that energises them.
She also mentions that having a support system from your loved ones proves to be very useful,
especially when dealing with colossal changes such as this one.
