Function High/Low Pressure Level Detection

Classification Control Sequence Protection PWM Operator Communication Other

1. Overview (general outline, selling points)

Provide pressure level detection either through an analog input or through the digital inputs. The digital inputs have
to be flexible such that they can be either normally-open or normally-closed. Pressure level faults will be generated
depending on inputs and the detection time limit.

2. Basic concept/principle

Configure an analog input for the pressure level detection sensor as well as digital inputs for high/low
normally-open/normally closed operation.
Provide a parameter to set whether analog or digital inputs are used for the pressure detection.
Provide a scalable pressure monitor dependent on the analog input.
Generate a high or low pressure fault based on the inputs and a programmable detection time limit.
Disallow low pressure detection for a settable amount of time during a start condition (including coming
out of sleep or zero-speed).

3. Changes from standard product (note detriments to existing functions, if any)

4. Limitations (based on inverter capacity, control mode, application, etc., if any)

5. Related parameters and functions (including multi-function selections)

6. Function description
When P1-01 = 0 (analog), the drive will read off the analog pressure level from the analog input set as 20: “Pressure
Input”. This value will be scaled according to P1-02, displayed on the U7-02 monitor as “Pressure” and compared to
both P1-03 and P1-04. If this input is greater than P1-03 for the time limit set in P1-06, then a “High Pressure” fault
will occur. Conversely, if this input is less than P1-04 for the time limit set in P1-07, then a “Low Pressure” fault will
occur.

When P1-01 = 1 (digital), the drive will read off the pressure levels from the digital inputs set inside the range of 84
up to 87. When a digital input is set to 84 (Low Pressure N.O.), and that input is closed for the time limit set in P1-07,
then a “Low Pressure” fault will occur. Similarly, if a digital input is set to 85 (High Pressure N.O.), and that input is
closed for the time limit set in P1-06, then a “High Pressure” fault will occur. The logic is simply reversed when using
the normally-closed (N.C.) settings.

The entire pressure detection functionality will be disabled when the drive is at zero speed, not running, or within a
PID sleep state.

During start-up from a zero-speed condition, setting P1-05 will disable low pressure detection for that time period.

Function DC Injection / Dwell Modifications

Classification Control Sequence Protection PWM Operator Communication Other

1. Overview (general outline, selling points)

One of the most commons problems in the field is the poor quality of the power supply with frequent power outages.
This causes the drive to trip and the driven rod to unwind. It can take between 20 to 60 minutes for the rod to unwind
depending on the load and the distance between the surface equipment and the pump. This time causes high losses
in production and in some cases; the rod can break (fail).

DC Injection at Start (B2 Group) can stop the turning rod, but if the loads are high, the drive can trip on an
Overtorque Detection Fault (OL3), which is used in this application to protect the pump. An Overvoltage (OV) trip
can also occur due to the stored energy of the rod.

During an Auto-Restart of a PCP, Speed Search should never be used and the drive should always start at 0Hz.
Performing DC Injection and then Dwell at start, and during an auto-restart would help bring the speed down.

2. Basic concept/principle

Anytime a fault is restarted, DC Injection will be applied, followed by Dwell (the standard Fault Restart function does
not apply DC Injection). After the DC Injection, while the drive ramps up to the dwell frequency and during the dwell
P1-05 will be used as the torque limit. DC injection and Dwell are disabled both for start and Automatic Fault Restart
when the Disable Controlled Restart digital input is closed.

3. Changes from standard product (note detriments to existing functions, if any)

The PID integral term will be set to zero during auto-restart.

4. Limitations (based on inverter capacity, control mode, application, etc., if any)

When Dwell is enabled, the maximum carrier frequency is 2.0 kHz. An OPE11 will occur if the carrier is set
above 2.0 kHz, or if a Swing-type carrier is selected.

If the drive is started or performs an automatic fault restart while the Disable Controlled Restart Digital Input (H1-XX
= 81) is closed, the P2-01 setting is ignored and neither DC Injection nor Dwell will occur.

When the Dwell function is occurring, the Forward and Reverse Torque Limit will both be set to the P2-02 Dwell
Torque Limit setting. This includes both during ramp up to the dwell frequency and during dwell. During DC Injection
standard torque limit parameters will be used. P2-02 is internally limited at 100% of the inverter rated torque.

When dwell is active and the drive is under the torque limit for the time specified in P2-03, the drive will automatically
end the dwell operation and continue accelerating normally. However, if the drive is still in torque limit when the B6-
02 dwell timer expires, a Dwell Time-out (DTO) fault occurs.

Function Undertorque Detection

Classification Control Sequence Protection PWM Operator Communication Other

1. Overview (general outline, selling points)

The PCP application requires monitoring of both Overtorque and Undertorque conditions. The rod is protected from
Overtorque conditions using the L7 Torque Limit parameter group and the L6 Overtorque Detection Fault (OL3)
parameter group. For Undertorque conditions, it is important to detect when the rod (or mechanical linkage) has
broken to minimize downtime. This can be accomplished using the L6 Undertorque Detection Fault (UL3) parameter
group.

However, during initial well installation or after extended downtime, the column of the oil in the well shaft is high,
which results in low torque levels during initial pumping. These torque levels are below the broken rod detection
levels, which cause false trips (broken rod torque detection levels are normally set around 6 ~ 8% while initial
pumping torque levels are 0 ~ 3%). This low torque condition lasts for approximately 30 minutes after initial run as
the excess oil is pumped from the well shaft.

2. Basic concept/principle
The Undertorque Detection (UL3) function is modified to include a delay timer at start that is activated by a multi-
function digital input. The UL3 condition will be ignored for the delay time to allow for the low torque condition at
initial start to end. After the delay timer has expired, the UL3 detection will be activated.

A frequency reference bias is employed that will increase the frequency reference during a low torque condition at
initial start. This will reduce the time it takes to pump off the excess oil in the well shaft and results in increased
production. After the delay timer has expired, the frequency bias will be deactivated.

Torq Det 1 Lvl (L6-02) can now be changed while running.

The upper limit of Torq Det 1 Time (L6-03) has been increased from 10.0s to 300.0s.

3. Changes from standard product (note detriments to existing functions, if any)

reference after an undertorque condition has occurred for the remaining
duration of the P1-03 time.

6. Function description
Undertorque Detection Fault Delay Time

The Undertorque Detection Fault (UL3) Delay Time (P2-04) is used to prevent nuisance UL3 trips caused by the
excess oil low torque condition at initial start. The delay time allows the UL3 trip level to be set for a broken rod
condition, which is above the initial start condition. This function is only enabled when the Undertorque Detection
Fault (UL3) Delay Command (H1-0X = 80) is present at the time the run command is issued or when auto-fault
restart occurs. After the P2-04 time expires, the UL3 fault detection will be activated.

Undertorque Speed Bias

The Undertorque Speed Bias (P2-05) is used to reduce the time necessary to pump off the excess oil in the well
shaft at initial start. This function is only enabled when the Undertorque Detection Fault (UL3) Delay Command (H1-
0X = 80) is present at the time of the run command or when auto-fault restart occurs. If the U1-09 Torque Reference
is less than the Undertorque Detection Level (L6-02), the Undertorque Speed Bias (P2-05) will be added to the
frequency reference (the total not to exceed the Maximum Output Frequency, E1-04). The speed bias is dependent
on the frequency reference:

New Frequency Reference = Incoming Frequency Reference + (Incoming Frequency Reference x P2-05%)

If the U1-09 Torque Reference rises above the Undertorque Detection Level (L6-02) before the Undertorque
Detection Delay Time (P2-04) expires, the Undertorque Speed Bias (P2-05) will be removed. After the Undertorque
Detection Delay Timer (P2-04) expires, the Undertorque Speed Bias (P2-05) will be removed unconditionally.

6. Function description
When Speed Step Select P3-01=1, the drive will accelerate in the following fashion:
1. When starting from zero-speed and Frequency Reference Lower Limit D2-02 > 0, accelerating frequency
reference will be set to D2-02.
2. When starting from zero-speed and D2-02 = 0, accelerating frequency reference will be set to P3-02.
3. When the accelerating frequency reference is reached, the drive will wait for the time set in Delta Time
Delay P3-03, after which the drive will increment the accelerating frequency reference by the Delta Speed
P3-02 value, and repeat this process until the target frequency reference (U1-91) is reached.

If P3-03 is changed while the drive is performing speed step, the drive will finish the current step using the previous
time, and apply the new time to the next step and thereafter.

Frequence Reference Bias (H3-XX = D) and Frequency Reference Gain (H3-XX = 1) will interact with Speed Search
as such:
If the gain input is changed resulting in an increased frequency reference, speed step will be active until the
new frequency reference is reached
If the bias input is changed resulting in an increased frequency reference, speed step will not be active until
bias effect has been accounted for.

6. Function description
When the Frequency Reference Lower limit D2-02 > 0.0% and the Low Speed Detection Time P4-01 > 0.0sec, the

Low Speed Fault detection is disabled when the drive is initially started until it is assumed to have arrived at the

Function Overvoltage Suppression

Classification Control Sequence Protection PWM Operator Communication Other

1. Overview (general outline, selling points)

This feature was included so that Pump Jack oil wells (which are typically unbalanced) can run without the need for
dynamic braking.

2. Basic concept/principle

The software monitors the level of torque-producing current (Iq) in the motor, and regulates this against an Iq
setpoint. If it sees that the torque producing current is below the set-point, the output frequency is increased to force
a higher (positive) Iq.

3. Changes from standard product (note detriments to existing functions, if any)

4. Limitations (based on inverter capacity, control mode, application, etc., if any)

• Overvoltage Suppression only active in V/F or O.L.V. control modes.

• Stopping method parameter b1-03 is ignored and stopping method (internally) is set to “Coast To Stop”
• When reverse operation is prohibited (b1-04 = 1) and the motor is moving in the reverse direction, O.V.
Suppression is disabled (This condition can occur due to a bi-directional speed search).

6. Function description
Overvoltage Regulator:

The level of torque-producing current is detected in the motor and subtracted from a setpoint (Iq Setpoint), then the
result is submitted to a PI algorithm (overvoltage regulator). The PI algorithm will add frequency to the frequency
reference in order to maintain a constant Iq setpoint. The PI algorithm will NOT subtract frequency from the
frequency reference. This is done to keep the torque producing current positive to prevent regeneration and
subsequent overvoltage faults.

Gain Increase Function

VSA910100-DS.DOCX 35 / 46
DRV-F-6002,R1
When parameters P5-06 & P5-07 are used, the gain of the overvoltage suppression regulator is automatically
increased when the drive’s output goes higher than motor base frequency (E1-06). Shown below is an example
when P5-06 = 60.00 Hz, and P5-07 = 2.000.

Figure 1: Iq Pgain – Increase gain above base speed

Belt Break Detection

If the output of the soft starter is at maximum frequency for more than 30 seconds, the drive assumes that the drive
belt or coupling between the motor and the load has become disconnected. At that time the drive will fault out on a
belt-break fault and coast to stop.

6. Function description
When P4-06 = 0, the Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) is disabled when the drive enters KEB-mode. Setting P4-
06 = 1 leaves the AVR enabled just like standard A1000.

When P4-07 = 0.00sec, the drive acts like standard A1000: when KEB completes and the soft starter output (U1-16)
is below the minimum operating frequency, the drive does not do a Speed Search attempt and always tries to start
at 0Hz

When P4-07 > 0.00sec, the drive will base block the drive after KEB completes if the soft starter output (U1-16) is
below the minimum operating frequency. The base block time is set by P4-07. After base block completes, the drive
will do a Speed Search if enabled.
