Instructional Procedures
Review
The previous day, the class was introduce to cause and effect with a simple mentor text (If You
Give A Mouse A Brownie). The teacher discussed with the class the cause and effect
relationships in the story and completed an activity to identify cause/effect relationships in real-
world situations.

“Good morning class! Yesterday we read the story If You Give A Mouse A Brownie and
discussed the cause and effect relationships in the story. Who can help me define what cause
and effect is? (One event causing another one to happen) Good job. I want you all to keep
thinking about cause and effect as we read our story for today.”
Overview
(This will be the second time that this mentor text will be read to the class. It was read
previously a week prior for a different teaching point. I chose this text because the student were
familiar with the plot.)

“Today boys and girls, we are going to be talking about cause and effect again with the story
My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother. Our goal is to be able to identify the cause and effect
relationships in the story, and then we are going to discuss how these relationships affect the
plot of the story. While we are reading, I want you to try to listen for the cause and effect
relationships in the story.”
Presentation
Teacher Demonstration:
The teacher will read the mentor text My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother. The teacher will
asks students to share examples of cause and effect that they heard from the story. The teacher
will discuss the examples given from students. If needed, the teacher will redirect class
discussion to focus on cause and effect.

*After the class exercise on identifying cause/effect relationships*

The teacher will pose the question “How did cause/effect change the plot of the story?”
Students will be able to share their thoughts and the teacher will guide the discussion.
Exercise
The teacher will guide the class through identifying different events from the story as either
cause or effect. The teacher will ask for student volunteers to answer and explain their
thinking. This lesson will be built upon in the next shared reading lesson where students will
be independently identifying the cause and effect in a story.
Summary
At the end of the lesson, the teacher will explain how cause/effect relationships affected the
plot of the story. The teacher will allow for the students to share what they have learned and
to define cause/effect in their own words.
