INTRODUCTION
MATERIALS FIRST!
MATERIAL CHOICES
When designing buildings we usually
have a choice as to what material to
specify
Materials can be compared as being
more or less harmful to the
environment.
We should obviously choose less
harmful materials.
We should use materials that use less
energy.
We should use materials that make our
buildings more efficient.
Materials should be both beautiful and
enduring.

EMBODIED ENERGY
Embodied energy = the sum of energy
inputs to make a product
-For full cradle-to-grave cycle, energy inputs
from:
• Extraction of raw materials
• Transportation to factory
• Manufacture of product / components
• Assembly of product / system
• Transportation to site / point of sale
• Installation / construction
• Maintenance
• Replacement
• Disposal / re-purposing / recycling

FLY ASH
•Fly ash is produced as a result of the combustion of coal. It is a
residue left at the end. Coal based thermal power plants
produce thousand of tonnes of fly ash annually. This is allowed
to be dispersed in the atmosphere or is usually dumped in
landfill sites and ash ponds.
•Particles of fly ash when air-borne are hazardous to both
fauna & flora. These particles on leaves of plants causes
chemical and physical damages and reduce photosynthesis
activity.
•When inhaled , lead to lung disorders in humans and animals.. It
also contaminates the groundwater sources from pond and
landfill sites.
Both Fly Ash and Blast Furnaces slag (BFS) have pozzolanic properties. They can be easily used in
construction industries. Using material like this reduces the amount of virgin materials required for the
production of high- embodied energy materials such as cement.
