An excellent educational institution is born of effective management and leadership.

Effective supervision can help managers and leaders to make their institutions excellent.
According to Boardman, Douglas and Bent (1953), supervision is:

"... the efforts to stimulate, coordinate, and guide the continued growth of the
teachers in a school, both individually and collectively, in better understanding and
more effective performance of all the functions of instruction so that they may be
better able to stimulate , coordinate, and guide the continued growth of the teachers
in school, both individually and collectively, in better understanding and more
effective performance of all the functions of instruction so that they may be better
able to stimulate and guide the continued growth of every pupils towards the richest
and most intelligent participation in modern democratic society. "

Referring to the above definition, supervision is seen as an effort to motivate, coordinate

and guide teachers in terms of teaching so that they are better able to perform all functions
related to teaching. Supervision in an educational institution can also be seen in two
aspects, namely the aspect of school procedures which is related to the function of the
school as an educational institution and the administrative aspect which refers to the supply
of financial resources, physical and time structure to complete supervision in school.
Therefore, as an excellent supervisor, the supervisor needs to plan effectively so that the
vision, mission and goals of an institution can be achieved well and excellently.

Planning is a key role as a supervisor. The definition of planning is as a process in which

managers determine the most appropriate goals and actions to achieve those goals. This
means, if the supervisor does not plan well then how can the supervisor achieve the vision,
mission and goals of the organization.

An effective planning process is, supervisors need to set goals and objectives. Once goals
and objectives are set, supervisors need to analyse the environment and interpret how the
set goals can be achieved. Then, the supervisor needs to establish the alternative methods
and actions used to perform the supervision. Supervisors also need to evaluate and select
the best alternatives and see who their subordinates are involved. Finally, the supervisor
needs to implement the actions that have been selected with the help of the necessary
resources. Past success can be used as a measure to see that this supervision can be
achieved well and effectively.
Therefore, planning is very important to provide direction to an educational institution. In
addition, it can help supervisors prepare to coordinate and organize all the resources
necessary to achieve organizational goals. Planning can also help supervisors to identify
opportunities and manage decision making
