AMERICAN AND EUROPEON COUNTRIES ARE RAISING THEIR
EYEBROWS”

INTRODUCTION
 Huawei is a Chinese multinational telecommunications
equipment and consumer electronics manufacturer,
headquatered in Shenzhen, Guangdong. The company was
founded in 1987 by Ren Zhengfei, a former military engineer in
People’s Liberation Army.

REAL STORY
 At the time of establishment, Huawei focused on
manufacturing phone switches, but has since expanded to
include telecommunication networks, providing operational
and consulting services and equipment to enterprise inside and
outside China.
 The company had over 170,000 employees as of September
2017 and 76,000 of them are engaged in research and
development (R&D). The company has 21 R&D institutes
spread across many countries like the United States, Canada,
the United Kingdom, Pakistan, Finland, Israel etc. The product
and services of Huawei are deployed in more than 170
countries. Its networks numbering over 1500, reaches one third
of the world’s population. It ranks 72nd on the Fortune Global
500 list.

REASON OF RAISING EYEBROWS

 There is an online high tech struggle between the U.S and
Chinese smartphone companies over national security. Huawei is
 now the 2nd largest smartphone player shipping more units than
Apple, the company is right behind Samsung. Huawei has been
under scrutiny from at least 2011 for its allegedly close ties to the
Chinese Government. Some U.S lawmakers and intelligence
officials think that Huawei’s hardware could also provide a
backdoor for China’s massive and sophisticated state
surveillance apparatus, Huawei denies these allegations.
 In 2012 House Intelligence Committee issued a report that
accused Huawei for stealing intellectual property from American
companies. The Pentagon stops selling mobile phones and
modems made by Huawei at stores on military basis in 2018
because of security risks. The directors of CIA, FBI, NSA and
other intelligence agencies made a case against Huawei. As a
result President Trump signed a bill of banning government use
of Huawei devices.
 Intelligence officials of American and European countries
claimed that Huawei can steal information by hacking their
devices. These companies are dangerous for national security and
privacy.
 5G is a super-fast network and Huawei wants to become a major
player in 5G outside China but is facing pressure internationally
because of cyber security concern. U.S and European countries
are doing their best to block the company from 5G projects and
most of them just did that.
