Meanings of the phrasal verbs:

(I took the phrasal verbs out of the sentences, so I just wrote the answers)
1. “Look it up” --- Find the meaning of a word.
2. “looks out” --- Have a view of.
3. “gave up (smoking)” --- Stop doing something.
4. “look after” --- Care for, be responsible for someone.
5. “looking for” --- Try to find.
6. “turned up” --- Arrive unexpectedly.

B. Answering the questions with the phrasal verbs:


1. What do women with long hair sometimes do to they hair when they play sports?
A: They put their hair up.
2. What do you say to a child who has just picked up a piece of broken glass?
A: “Put it down!!!”
3. What do people do when they go out in cold weather?
A: They put on a jacket and more warm clothes.
4. What do you do with a sweater when you come into a warm house?
A: I take it off.

C. Matching the phrasal verb with the meaning:


1. Carry on --- Continue.
2. Find out --- Learn, discover.
3. Get on --- Like being with. * (*This was the only possible answer because all the
others were taken, but I am not completely sure).
4. Grow up --- Become adult.
5. Turn up --- Arrive unexpectedly.
6. Settle down --- Live in one place.
7. Set off --- Start a journey. * (*I am not sure, either).

D.Complete the paragraph with the verbs from the previous exercise:
I recently read my grandfather's diaries, and I found out a lot of interesting things about
his life. Apparently, he grew up in San Francisco. He and his parents didn't get on at all,
and when he was 18 he decided to see America. He set off with very little money and
travelled east. He carried on until he reached New York, where he got a job washing up
in a restaurant. He fell in love with one of the waitresses, and one day he turned up at
her flat with a bunch of roses and asked her to marry him. Surprisingly, she agreed, and
he settled down with her in New York, where they had 3 children.

E. Complete the sentences with the verbs from the box.


1. The party carried on till 4 a.m.
2. My 10-year-old daughter wants to be a nurse when she grows up.
3. We’ve got a long way to drive, so we ought to set off as early as possible.
4. Oh dear – I’ve just found out that I’ve only got 10$ in the bank.
5. She was late. She turned up at 9 o’clock.
6. Now, you’re 30, it’s time you settle down and got a good, steady, job.
7. Don’t ask me to share an office with Richard – we don’t get on at all.

F. Complete the sentences using “it”, “them” or “me” and the phrasal verbs:
1. I’m too hot with this coat on. Do you mind if I take it off?
2. I need to get up early tomorrow. Could you wake me up at half past six?
3. I like these shoes. Can I try them on, please?
4. Here’s a jacket. Why don’t you put it on if you’re cold?
5. My hair is very untidy. I think I’ll wash it up for the interview.

G. Complete the sentences using the phrasal verbs:


1. Could you turn up the TV? I can’t hear.
2. Don’t forget to switch off the lights when you go out.
3. I’ll have to look it up in the dictionary.
4. Don’t throw away that old painting.
5. Let’s ring them up and see if they want to come with us.
6. I’d better take off these trousers. They are soaking wet.
7. Turn it off – the water is overflowing.
8. If you like those jeans, why don’t you try them on and see if they suit you?

H. Complete the paragraph with phrasal verbs:


I'll never forget my English teacher at school. I never got on with her. If there was
a word I didn't understand, she used to make me look it up in the dictionary. I never
dared to put up// my hand because I was afraid she'd tell me off. And if I gave up doing
the exercises she gave us for any reason, she got furious. I always looked forward to
the end of the lesson. That's why I always looked up to my brother George, because he
carried on studying English until he left school.

I. Complete the sentences with the phrasal verbs in the box:


1. I trusted her, but then she let me down.

***The ones marked with (//), I’m not so sure about them. This is the exercise that took
me the most time to complete.
