More than a century ago, a number
of our fellow men and women made
sacrifices to the extent of offering
their lives to fight for our country’s
freedom. They gave their lives in
order for others to live and to be
free. Yes, they are our Heroes! It
may be recalled that at that time our
country, the Philippines, was under
the Spanish colonial rule. With
oppression, cruelty and inequality
that characterized their rule, the
sense of nationalism and the pursuit
for freedom was awaken in the
hearts and minds of these Filipinos
that prompted them to rise up
against the Spaniards.
value the sacrifices, the struggles
and the battles our heroes fought to
be free, which freedom we presently
experience. They serve as a guide in
our continued pursuit to serve the
people towards a more free,
peaceful and progressive nation. We
are fortunate today because we do
not need to lay our lives in order to
realize and sustain those freedoms
and ideals. What we need is sincerity
and dedication to fulfill our sworn
duty as public servants. To serve for
the interest and for the betterment
of the society in general, just like our
Heroes, and not for our self-interest.
Their service and sacrifice are
worthy to emulate!

What we enjoy right now as a

Filipino nation we owe a lot to our
heroes. The likes of Dr. Jose Rizal,
Andres Bonifacio, Apolinario Mabini
to name a few greatly contributed to
the realization of our free nation.

Today, we learn about the sacrifices,

the works and service of our heroes
through history books or the lessons
taught by our teachers. However,
there remain a constant need to
pass on to the present generation of
Filipinos the relevance, the
contribution and importance of our
Philippine heroes, otherwise we will
lose part of our identity as a citizen
and a nation. Thus, the directive
from the Department of Education
on putting up a Heroes Park in every
elementary and secondary school in
our country is a laudable initiative.
