BACKGROUND

MARPOL Annex VI establishes the regulation of a global sulphur cap, as well as


stricter regulation in Emission Control Areas (ECAs). As of January 2015, the limit
applicable in ECAs is 0.1%S. In October 2016, the IMO Marine Environment Protection
Committee (MEPC) agreed to lower the existing Annex VI global cap from 3.5%S to
0.5%S as of January 2020. It is also worth noting that there are ports around the world
that have chosen to establish their own sulphur limits outside of those set by MARPOL
Annex VI. In some cases, these limits are even stricter than what is applicable for the
global cap.

However, IMO has also approved the use of higher-sulfur fuels with
exhaust gas scrubbers that remove a corresponding amount of
Sulphur oxides, or SOx. This is referred to as an “equivalence” in
IMO terminology.

SYSTEM OVERVIEW

Open- Loop Mode
Sea water is used to scrubber to spray the exhaust gas and remove SOx.
After passing the scrubber, the water is treated by sea water to meet the
MEPC 184(59) discharged criteria, then discharge into the sea.
Exhaust gas enters the scrubber from the bottom to the top of scrubber
and is sprayed with sea water by four lays of spray nozzles, the sulphur
oxide in the exhaust reacts with sea water and forms sulphuric acid.
Chemicals are not required normally as the natural alkalinity of sea water
neutralizes the acid. However, NaOH system will be designed while the
vessel sail on the low acid water or fresh water to exempt seaman to
change the fuel oil frequently.

Closed- Loop Mode
The scrubber works continuously in closed loop, means that one does not
need to worry about sea water alkalinity levels. This system is best suited
for full time operation in low alkalinity areas( e.g. Great Lakes) and fresh
water areas(e.g. rivers and lakes).
In a closed loop scrubber system, the exhaust gas enters the scrubber
and is sprayed with water that has been mixed with NaOH. The sulfur
oxides in the exhaust react with the mixture and are neutralized. The
bleed-off washing water is treated to fulfil IMO requirements and can be
safely discharged overboard with harmless to the environment.
If operation in zero discharge mode is requested, the effluent can be led
to a holding tank for scheduled and periodical discharge.

Hybrid- Loop Mode

ZEPT additionally provides hybrid solutions. These solutions have the


flexibility to operate in both open and closed loop. This provides a
flexibility of operation in low alkaline waters as well as the open ocean.
The system can be operated in zero discharge mode for a limited period
and when at sea can be switched to open loop using only sea water.

Scrubber——In general, there are two types


of scrubber: I-Type and U-Type. Considering the
high temperature and severe corrosion of flue
gas, we choose the special stainless steel like
SMO254 and SAF2507 to ensure the scrubber
working properly with long lifetime. The capacity
depends on the max. flow of exhaust gas and
takes scrubbing efficiency and resorting time of
flue gas into account.

Exhaust and decompression fan——It is mainly


used to solve the problem of exhaust back pressure of main
engine, generators, especially boilers. Special stainless
steel with high corrosion resistance is adopted in the design
to overcome the corrosion of high-temperature flue gas. At
the same time, seawater cooling is adopted to ensure the
reliable operation of the exhaust and decompression fan in

Sprinkler system —— sprinkler system includes


sprinkler pipelines and sprinkler nozzles, etc. Fully
considering the corrosion and high temperature
resistance, we select the most suitable material and
type of sprinkler system. Which also ensures the best
spraying effect and anti-blocking treatment. With
professional CFD analysis and reasonable selection,
ZEPT sprinkler system can achieve great atomization
effect to ensure full contact and neutralization of flue
gas and washing water.

CEMS —— The main purpose of the


ShipCEMS Continuous Emission Monitoring
System is to analyse sufhur dioxide and
carbon dioxide in wet marine exhaust gas.
The standard ShipCEMS consists of the
following main units:
• Analyser cabinet
• Sample Conditioning System(s)
• Heated sample probe(s)
• Heated sample line

WQMS —— The Water Quality Monitoring System is a cabinet


for continuously measuring various parameter of the wastewater.
It can be equipped with three types of sensors: the enviroFlu, for
measuring PAH, the Ttrub for turbidity and the TpH-D to measure
the pH value.

TECHNICAL TEAM

ZEPT has the technical team both of desulphurization and ship design.
The purpose is to meet the applicability of the system to ships in all aspects
technically. At the same time, we also pay high attention to the specific rules of
specifications/conventions, such as the propagation of vibration and the overall
performance of the vessel.
The DeSOx system is a new system and in the initial stage for marine. The
configuration of our technical team is not only for the manufacturing of the
system, but also to provide technical support for ship owners, shipyards and
design companies.
