Saginaw Church Starting Community Garden To Fight Food Desert'
The church acquired a group of properties along Cathay Street which will house 44
raised garden beds, according to a news release. The church will mark the beginning
of its planting season from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday with an open house and ribbon-
cutting ceremony.
The neighborhood surrounding the church is a food desert, according to the release,
an issue that has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has showed us how people of color are disproportionately
affected by the coronavirus because of preexisting conditions such as diabetes,
high blood pressure, and heart disease,” the release reads. “Each of these
conditions is exacerbated by the lack of access to nutritious food and regular
exercise.”
Each garden bed will be planted, maintained and harvested by gardeners assigned to
each space after submitting an application. Slots are first-come, first-served and
produce will be shared with the community as it’s harvested, according to the
release.
