Lesson 4: Polynomial Expression

Overview: The purpose of this lesson is for the student

to learn about Polynomial Expression

Objectives:
1. The student must be able to identify what is
Polynomial Expression
2. The student must be able to classify what is
Polynomial Expression

The word polynomial is made of two words, "poly" and "nomial", meaning

many terms. It is used in math for representing expressions. Thus,
a polynomial expression is a sentence with a minimum of two numbers and at
least one math operation in it. Any expression which consists of variables,
constants and exponents, and is combined using mathematical operators like
addition, subtraction, multiplication and division is a polynomial expression.

Example:

1.  x²-12x-28=0             2. x²+5x-14

      ^           ^                       ^           ^
     x.x    -14.2                   x.x        7.(-2)
   (x-14) (x+2)=              (x+7)  (x-2)=0
   x-14=0  x+2=0           x+7=0   x-2=0
   x=14     x= -2              x=-7      x=2
Exercise: Identify the following equation if it is polynomial or not polynomial.

1. x²+2x+5
2.5x+1
3.(x⁷+2x⁴-5)*3x
4.5x²+1
5.3x½+2
6.(5x+1)÷(3x)
7.(6x²+3x)÷(3x)
