Hurricanes are dangerous and destructive. Also known as cyclones or typhoons in
other parts of the world, hurricanes cause high winds, floods, torrential rains, and
storm surges (huge waves).

People call these storms by different names like typhoons or cyclones depending
on where they occur. The scientific term for all these storms is tropical cyclone.
Only tropical cyclones that form over the Atlantic Ocean and the eastern Pacific
Ocean are called "hurricanes."

Whatever they are called, all tropical cyclones form the same way.Tropical
cyclones are like giant engines that use warm, humid air for fuel. That is why they
form only over warm water oceans, near the equator. The warm, humid air over
the oceans rises from near the surface. As air moves upward and away from the
surface, less air remains near the surface. Another way of saying the same thing
is that warm air rises causing an area of lower air pressure near the ocean.

Air with higher pressure from the surrounding areas fills the low pressure area. Then
this "new" air becomes warm and humid and also rises. As the warm air continues to
rise, the surrounding air rotates to take its place. When warm, humid air rises and
cools, the water in the air forms clouds. The entire cloud and air system rotates and
grows, fueled by heat from the ocean and water evaporating from the surface.

Storms that form north of the equator rotate counterclockwise. Storms south of the
equator rotate in a clockwise direction. This difference is due to the fact that the
Earth rotates on its axis.

As the storm system rotates faster and faster, an eye is formed in the center. In the
eye everything is very calm and clear, with very low air pressure. Upper high-
pressure air descends into the eye.
