Description Of The Course: Rizal’s Life, Works and Writings (RLWW)


This course covers Rizal’s childhood up to his death, from his
biographical sketch, childhood memories. Ateneo days, life abroad,
deportation to Dapitan, his arrest up to his execution at Bagumbayan Field,
now called Rizal Park.
His famous works Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo (The Reign of
Green were outstanding that brought about enlighten among educated and
well-read Filipino during his time.
His immortal novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo will be the focused
of intelligent discussion at the late past of the term but his other popular
works will also touched for aesthetic purposes, love of country as themes. A
writer said Rizal has been exemplary model for government officials as
corruptible and courageous. It is without doubt that Dr. Jose Protacio Rizal is
worthy to be our national hero.

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the course, the learners would be able to:


1. Trace the growth of the boy Rizal, from infancy up to his childhood
memories.
2. See the strong character of Rizal while he was studying in Ateneo and
The University of Sto. Tomas, where he experienced bias and
discrimination that Spain authorities afforded even a well-to-do-
Filipino.
3. Notes down major events are Rizal’s life while he was in Paris, Germany,
Hong Kong, London, And, Madrid that shows his love of country, the
Philippines.
4. Rizal’s practice of Multiple Intelligence (by Howard Gardner 1983,)
while was deported in Dapitan.
5. Give a firm stand on “Rizal’s Retraction, using different sources and
references.
6. Explain the significance of the publication of 2 Novels-Noli Me Tangere

*Doñ a Teodora is a follower of San Jose. Thus naming her youngest son “Jose”

*Dr. Rizal house was high and made of solid and massive earthquake proof
structure with modern design as describe in the book.
3. Why is Calamba referred to as “cradle of a genius ? Described Calamba as a

*Calamba is the town that give birth to our hero. And Calamba offers a
veritable scenery of sunny contours and romantic sun.

*As Rizal’s father, he was a good provider. He worked very efficient as a
farmer that he was able to feed and give his family a decent and comfortable
life.
5. Identify the qualities of Dona Teodora as a mother
*As Rizal’s mother, Doñ a Teodora was good and hardworking mother. She
was able to give her children’s needs.
6. How did biographer Rafael Palma describe Rizal ?
*Rafael Palma described him as a mature in his beliefs and calls any stories
about the retraction of those belief a “pious fraud”.
7. What could be the reason why Don Francisco chooses Rizal as the family
name of his children?
*The origin of Rizal family was “Mercado” Don Francisco don’t have interest in
other surname so he chooses Rizal as their surname because it is more
appropriate.
8. Describe the family of Rizal as a social institution. Why should the family
strive to attain its noble objectives
*The Rizal family had a noble history and contributed many things in the
Philippines.

9. Explain the old adage, “ spare the rod and the spoil children”
*The spare rod and the spoil child means, if the parent refuses to discipline an
unruly child, that child will grow accustomed to getting his own way.
10. What are the functions of the family? How would you described the
Filipino family today?
*I would describe the typical Filipino family today as a happy family.

1. Described the life of Rizal as a young boy. Compare his life when he was
young to our boys today.
*The childhood of Jose Rizal can be characterized by his desire to learn, even
frequenting the church nearby his home to watch and observe people but not
to be religiously inclined. Jose Rizal was not a physically blessed or
strong child however, he had a strong will guided and taught by his mother,
his first teacher.
2. What inspired Rizal as a young his poem, “ In Memory of My Town?” What
was the message of the poem?
*Jose Rizal remembers his childhood days in Calamba, Laguna. Rizal had the
happiest and most beautiful memories of the place, the hospitality and
friendliness as well as the industry of the people of Calamba.
3. What do you think are the effects psychological and emotional of a good
environment to a young boy growing child? Explain your answer
*It will have a good significant effects because the environment where he
grows is very good for a growing child.
4. As a young boy, what was his bitter memory ? when you were a young boy
like Rizal, can you remember an unpleasant memory or experience in your
life? Can you relate?
*An average child at the age of 2 years old can remember certain things
happened in their past and it is inevitable to remember because it gives
unforgettable experienced.
5. As a student, what are your religious activities that can provide for spiritual
nourishment?
*Praying and thanking the creator for a wonderful life and always be positive.
6. Do you think that early childhood, the child should know the meaning of
discipline? Explain your answer.
*Yes, indeed because while the children is young and still learning they need
to learn discipline because when they grow they will bring this into their
adulthood.
7. Why was Dona Teodora arbitrarily arrested by the Spanish authorities?
*Their matriarch, Doñ a Teodora, was arrested on suspicion that she had tried
to help her brother, Don Jose Alberto, in poisoning his wife. That her sister-in-
law had been unfaithful to Jose Alberto did not seem to matter at all.
8. Under our present judicial system, what are the constitutional rights of the
accused.
*The right to not speak while interrogating and the right to have a lawyer.
9. What is meant by the due process of law? Explain your answer.
*Due process fair treatment through the normal judicial system, especially as
a citizen's entitlement.
10. How did the unlawful arrest of the mother of Rizal affect his life? Explain
your answer.
*Dona Teodora arrest affect the morale of Rizal.

Task 4:
1. Can you enumerate significant event in Rizal’s life? When he was a boy?
Answer:
*He grew up in a home environment characterized by joy and contentment.
His birth place was ideal for a poets and writers like him.
2. What are the injustices that the young Rizal’s experience through.
Answer:
* His family had more trouble over their land without waiting for the outcome
of the lawsuit the Governor General, no more remembered for his honesty in
the Philippines than he is in Cuba for his humanity. "Butcher" Weyler, had sent
troops to Kalamba. The litigants were told they must carry away their
buildings and sugar mills but could bring them back again should the lawsuits
be decided in their favor.

3. Do you think these injustices contribute to his character? Why? Why not?
Answer
*This makes Rizal motivated and give back to those who experienced what he
experienced when he was young.
Task 5:
1. Describe Rizal’s life in Ateneo?

*As what usually happens, Rizal was discriminated by his classmates and
professors, mainly because he had only a little knowledge about Spain, and
also the fact that he was form Calamba, Laguna. He was also a late enrollee, so
that added up to the situation. But inspite of the negative things that
happened to him during this time, he also experienced good things.

2. How was his life in The University of Sto. Tomas ?

* Rizal, upon entering the university, was not certain which course of study he
wanted to pursue. The Jesuit priests who had been his former mentors had
advised him to take up farming, or to join the order and be a man of the cloth.
However, his tastes went towards law, literature, or medicine. In the end, he
decided to sign up for Philosophy and Letters during his freshman year
because of the following reasons

*think the reason why Don Francisco wanted Rizal to study first in Letran is because he

for Rizal toattain his capabilities, he should study in Ateneo where he can manage his
abilities and improveall his skills with the kind of teaching in Ateneo.

2. What is your impression about Ateneo de Manila as an educational


institution many years ago and today ?

*Ateneo de manila from many years ago is an educational institution made for
intelligent persons whom have no money to support their studies. They
provide supports with no payments frm poor people. And as compared today,
Ateneo de Manila is now a privately held educational institution that offers
their services for thousand pesos and mostly rich people are the one who can
study in there but as compared long time ago, the degree of education they
provide is really exceptional.

3. What was the reason why Rizal was almost denied admission at Ateneo

*Rizal was almost denied to admit in ateneo because of his poor health and
short stature.

4. As a student what was your experience during first day in a new school
environment ?

*I was nervous and excited because new school, new friends

5.What was his prize winning poem at Ateneo? Can you tell the message of the
poem?

* To the Filipino Youth, which tells about the love of the country and rizal
wanted each one of the Filipino youth to develop their passion of fighting for
freedom because Rizal’s saying was “Kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan”

6. As a student how can your inspire you to study harder? Are getting high
grades the only motivating factor?

*Having high grades is not the only motivating factor, when we get high
grades we are motivated to improve more to maintain our standing.

7. What are the qualities do you expect from a teacher?

*Considerate and kind to any circumstances especially when the student can’t
understand a lesson.

8. Identify the weak points of a teacher that impede the affectivity of the
teaching learning proves in the classroom.

*Skips important things and make the tasks hard for the students

Module I: This modules covers the meaning of philosophy and reasons why a
person needs to study philosophy. It also touches different theories and
philosophers that offer explanations or justifications for human acts. To
illustrate how a person’s confidence is the developed, two simple poems on
the “Self” are tackled in this module.
