Three-phase Circuits power Analysis

Objectives

To determine the total power of Three-phase circuit by using wattmeter at a single frequency
for balanced Three-phase voltage sources.

Introduction
A balanced three phase circuit consisted of three voltage sources having same magnitude and
frequency but diffent phase is constructed using multisim software. Wattmeter is used for
meauring the power of each voltage source. The wattmeter measures the magnitude of the
active power (Watts), that is, the product of the voltage difference and the current flowing
through the current terminals in a circuit. The wattmeter also displays the Power factor,
calculated by:

Generally there are two methods for measuring power of Three-phase circuits i.e. 3-wattmeter
and 2-wattmeter method. The circuit diagram for power measurement of balanced three phase
circuit using both methods is shown in Fig. 7-1 and Fig. 7-2, respectively.

Procedure:

1. First obtain the schematics window by double clicking the Multisim icon.

2. Obtain ac voltage source VAC, resistor R, Wattmeter (XWM1) and electrical ground
EGND from instrument toolbar.
3. To use the wattmeter instrument, click the button wattmeter available in the option
simulate then Instruments toolbar and click to place its icon on the workspace. The
icon, shown below, is the visual of Wattmeter used to wire the meter to the circuit.

4. Make circuit as shown in Fig. 7-1 & 7-2 for both methods individually.

5. Double click ac voltage source and E Part Name: VAC dialog box will appear.
Provide the information as shown in Fig. 7-3. Type 120V against voltage (RMS) of
each source and click Save Attr button to save. Type 100 against frequency (F) for

each source and click Save Attr button. Type 0, -120 and -240 against PHASE for
each source and click Save Attr button. Click Display button for each entry a dialog
box will appear. Select both Symbol and footprint pin name.

6. Before we analyze the network we must save the schematic.

8. Run (F5) will simulate the analysis.

9. For output analysis, Double-click on the icon (XMW1) for Wattmeter to open the
instrument face. This is where you view measurements. The field at the top of the
instrument face shown below in Fig. 7-4 displays the average power. The Power factor
field displays the power factor between 0 and 1.
