MAN 304 Human Resources Management

Mid-term Take-home exam

Instructor:Dr. Vildan Taşlı Karabulut

1.Discuss how national culture of a country influences HRM policies

and practices of companies?

-Today, the international work of large companies imposes certain requirements in

direct proportion to their development. The largest of these requirements is required
in the field of human resources management. What needs to be done in this area is
primarily related to the legal regulations of other countries and the characteristics of
their national cultures. The culture of employees working in global businesses may
be different from the national culture of one country. This is because businesses
develop their own values and culture. Thus, it can become a multinational company.
They can also sometimes inadvertently violate some rules and cultural differences
cause professional mis understandings.

2. Briefly explain the concept of internal recruitment (with your

own words). Discuss the advantages and challenges of internal
recruitment.
-Internal recruitment is to bring an employee (it is the first choice to have someone
with the necessary knowledge and experience) within the company to the required
position in the business.

Advantages:
- It's cheaper and faster to recruit staff internally than it is externally as it leverages
employees that you already have. Also, research has shown that external hiring may
cost 1.7 times more than internal recruitment.

- It saves time by reducing recruitment time.

Challenges:
- The biggest challenge can create tension between the hired person and the
employees there.

- It will cause a deficit in the old position of the person you are repositioning, which
will cause you to lose extra cost and time.

- Doing most of your hiring from inside your business may result in a stagnant culture.

3. Watch the Ted Talk ‘Talent 5.0 - Taking Recruitment

Practices to a New Level’ by Stefanie Stanislawski. What
major points does she discuss about recruitment in this
talk?

- The main subject of the video is the effects of using artificial intelligence in

recruitment. For example, a person works in a company but does not like the job he
works for. So he is looking for a job to love in his spare time. After finding the job, he
leaves where he worked. Then the company he left is looking for a new employee to
fill his position, losing time in this time and using other employees to fill that deficit.
Overtime of other employees disturbs them and they decide to leave. Thus, it causes
too many personnel shortages in the company and causes more time and financial
damage. But, as the woman explains in the video, it can be much better for both
employees and the company if artificial intelligence is used to find out in which areas
the person has the talent in recruitment and that it will perform a more effective job.
4. How have companies responded to the coronovirus
pandemic? Support your answers with evidence from one
company example.
-Most companies have closed their stores in other countries or suspended them for a

certain period of time. The biggest examples, Starbucks, closed more than half of its
branches in China. IKEA has decided to close its stores in China. Volkswagen
stopped production at its factories for two weeks.
4.1. What challenges are companies facing at the moment?

-Many factories or production sites are experiencing financial decline as they stop
working. In addition, since the workers do not work in the factories where production
is made, it seriously challenges the structure of the companies. If this situation
continues, we can even see companies sinking.
-They also have difficulty running their business because they are not prepared for
such a situation. Especially microsoft and apple announced that they are in financial
decline.
4.2. What solutions are they applying?
- First of all, they protect their employees. Most companies continue their business
online.
- Google, Microsoft, Twitter. Hitachi, Apple, Amazon. Chevron, Salesforce, Spotify.
From the UK to the USA, from Japan to South Korea, all of them have started
implementing forced labor policies from home with the spread of Covid-19 in the past
few days.
- Airlines have suspended the flights.
- They increase work in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

- HP committed to donating millions of dollars in technology and support to help

students, families, and communities.
- Companies started to provide online training for their employees.
- The devices named Medibook, which enables the healthcare personnel to monitor
the patients remotely, started to be developed.
