Pressure and volume in gases

1 Describe what is happening to the pressure and volume of the gas in the two
diagrams below, assuming that the temperature of the gas does not change.

The pressure is increasing from the first picture to the second, and the volume is decreasing

2 a Explain how a gas exerts a pressure.

The particles bounce against the walls of their container and exert a force, creating pressure

b The graph shows how the pressure and volume of a gas changes when it is
kept at a constant temperature.

Use the graph to find:

i the pressure of the gas when the volume of the gas is 25 cm3.

ii the volume of the gas when its pressure is 800 kPa.

c Use at least two pairs of values from the graph to show that this gas obeys
the rule: pressure (kPa)  volume (cm3) = 10 000 kPa cm3

20*500 = 10 000, 50*200 = 10 000

3 The pressure and volume of a gas at constant temperature can be written in the
form pV = constant. If p = 670 kPa and V = 42 cm3, find the value of each of the
following, giving your answers to 2 significant figures:
a the constant
