1. Introduction

1.1 Project description

MCGM has awarded a design built tender for demolition and reconstruction of a bridge
over a creek near SNDT College on Juhu Tara road to HV constructions. The bridge is over
a main road connecting Santacruz to Juhu and form a main connection road between Bandra
to JVPD. The span is 16.6 m and width is 30.5 m approx for both way traffic forming 15.25
m going to Santacruz for eastward travel and 15.25 m going towards Juhu for westward
travel. The scope of work includes demotition of existing bridge and rebuilding a new in
two phases, first for west ward traffic flow and opening the traffic and demolition and
construction of the bridge for estward traffic. This report deals in the detail design report of
the work.
The design and analysis is carried out in MIDAS software and the out put of the same is
attached herewith. The soft copy of the MIDAS out put is also attached for review. The
contents of the report also include the design calculations and drawings for review and
approval.

1.2 Bridge description

Bridge orientation = east-west on Juhu Tara Road near SNDT college at


Santacruz (w)
span = 16.6 m
width = 30.5 m
east ward carriage way 11.5 m three lanes
west ward carrieage way 11.5 m three lanes
foot path on both sides with utility gallery placed below
raising the whole road by 600 mm over the existing level to accommodate for SWD flow
requirements for high flood Level in rainy seasons
refer the GAD for more details
1.3 Construction Methodology

The existing bridge shall be demolished.


a) The water channel will be filled with soil accomodating for small water flow by providing
RC pipes below.
b) secant piles of 1200 mm shall be cast on both sides which forms support for the RCC deck
slab forming the bridge
c) on the top, compacted soil + soling/ GSB shall be laid over which M-10 grade PCC shall be
laid, and LDPE sheets shall be laid over the PCC.
d) over thsis arrangement reinfocement shall be placed and RCC slab cast monolith with the
Secant piles wall on both sides.
e) after the slab is cast/ cured soil below shall be excavted and the channel made good.

2.3 Structural idealization - MIDAS Model

A three-dimensional space frame model is developed in MIDAS. Superstructure as well as substructure is modelled with appropriate structural
and soil stiffness. It should be noted that soil springs are taken from GIR. Loads are applied at appropriate levels on structural model to
effectively simulate loading conditions.

4. Load and Load combinations

4.1 Basic loads

Various loads are calculated in unit dimensions and applied in MIDAS for contributory
width of individual grillage member.

4.1.1 Dead loads

Dead load of the entire structure is considered corresponding to cross-sectional properties


and density of concrete.

Capping beam is modelled as plate element with appropriate thickness and secant piles are
considered as beam element. Dead weight of the same is considered corresponding to it's
density.

To be on conservative side, maximum seismic force is applied corresponding to Sa/g = 2.5.


Seismic force in transverse direction is ignored as structural has very large stiffness in
transverse direction and reinforcement requirement due to same will be negligible.

4.1.8 Braking force

Braking force is applied at level which is 1.2m above top of levelling course placed on solid
slab. To facilitate load application in MIDAS, braking force is applied as uniformly
distributed force for entire length of bridge where live load can be placed.

Case : 1 - When three lanes of class-A is loaded

Total braking force for entire bridge length : 245 kN

Case : 2 - When one lane of class-A is loaded along with one lane of class 70R

Total braking force for entire bridge length : 223 kN

4.1.9 Differential settlement

Settlement of the pile group is considered in MIDAS corresponding to 6mm for all the piles
either at abutment A1 or abutment A2.

Soil pressure corresponding to at rest condition is applied on capping beam and part of
secant piles which is exposed to environment at nallah side.
