2.0 Methodology
The methodology adopted for preparation of Detailed Design and Drawing has been discussed here for
making the Design and Drawing illustrative:
2.1 Reconnaissance Survey
The team of engineers and the officials that visited the site, carried out reconnaissance survey to know all
the relevant information regarding the following:
Another parameter for deciding the span arrangement is the height of approach road w.r.t. the HFL. In the
present case, the existing ground level at both end of the river bank is almost at the same level as of HFL.
Now, considering the differences between HFL & LBL, which is 5.121 m, and adding 1.5m vertical
clearance, the span length should be about 1.5 * 6.621m to 2* 6.621m i.e., 9.9315m to 13.242 m.
Secondly, the height of approach road will be considerably higher requiring wider land requirement at the
junction of the abutment at both end or guard wall of sufficient height to reduce the land requirement.
Therefore, we have adopted span of 21.75 m effective span, which is 22.36 m in total, in order to make
the bridge an economical one.
In this case 9 nos. of equal span of 21.75 m effective span each has been adopted.
Thus although the time consumed in determining the catchment area, is more using Google earth, the
accuracy is more too.
Another point is computation of catchment area using graph or plain meter and sophisticated software like
Global mapper. The sophisticated software like Global Mapper gives much accurate result.
The HFL is ascertained from watermarks, if available or the permanent objects on the banks supplemented
by local enquiry from nearby inhabitants as to the highest flood levels reached during their living memory.
The others parameters is described in the above report has been computed and enclosed in the
Hydrological calculation section. The alternate method is rational method, which is described here too,
although this should be used only for case where catchment area is less than 25 sq.km.
Q= 0.028* f *P * A * tc
S = energy slope which may be taken equal to the bed slope measured over a reasonably long reach
n = Rugosity coefficient
For value of n, following Table is used. Judgment and experience are necessary in selecting a proper value
of n for a given stream.
1 Clean, Straight bank, full stage, no rifts or deep poles 0.025 0.0275 0.03 0.033
2 Same as ( 1 ), but some weeds and stones 0.03 0.033 0.035 0.04
3 Winding, some pools and shoals , clean 0.035 0.04 0.045 0.05
λ is a function of the size, shape and roughness of the stream and is called its conveyance factor.
Thus the discharge carrying capacity of a stream depends on its conveyance factor and slope.
The boring work using Shell and Auger method commenced in accordance with IS: 1892-1979, which
consists of boring of 150 mm dia borehole and conducting Standard Penetration Test (SPT) in accordance
with IS: 2131- 1981 at 1.5 m interval by connecting a split spoon sampler to ‘A ‘ rods and driving it by 45
cm. The numbers of blows for each 15 cm of penetration were recorded. The numbers of blow required to
penetrate ting the initial 15 cm of the split spoon for seating the sampler is ignored due to the possible
presence of loose materials. The cumulative numbers of blow to penetrate the balance 30 cm interval is
termed as ‘N’ value. The ‘N’ values are presented on the bore log of each bore hole. Refusal to further
boring penetration was considered when ‘N’ value exceed 100 or when practical refusal to further
penetration was encountered.
Disturbed soil collected in the SPT sampler was preserved in the polythene covers and transported to
laboratory for determining the soil properties by conducting different laboratory testing.
In the present case, detailed sub soil investigation report has been enclosed in Annexure- IV.
3.4 Selection of Type of Foundation:
The foundation has to be provided minimum 3m – 4m below maximum scour depth. In the present case,
the computed MSL for Abutment is 96.482 m, however the non-erodible hard stratum is found within a
depth of 11m depth from GL. The ground level near abutment A-1 and A-2 is 101.268 m , and 100.804 m.
In such situation providing Open/Pile foundation below non erodible stratum for A-1 & A-2 is practically
possible hence we have adopted Open/Pile foundation for abutment A-1 & A-2.
3.5 Substructure:
Substructure include those portions of a bridge which are above the foundation which includes piers,
abutments and piers caps, dirt walls, return , wing walls etc. But exclude bearings and superstructure. It
can be built of brick/stone masonry, plain/reinforced/Prestressed concrete. Steel selection of particular
type substructure depends upon the span and type of superstructure, the height of substructure,
availability of construction materials and construction equipment, period and time of construction and
above all on overall economy.
Substructure shall be designed to withstand the loads and forces as specified in IRC: 6, the most
combination of forces and factors of safety shall be as specified in IRC: 78. For allowable stresses and
other design requirements relevant IRC codes depending upon the type of construction materials shall be
followed.
In the present case, there is no pier in the bridge. However, the abutment has been adopted as well type.
3.7 Superstructure:
It is the superstructure of a bridge that directly supports the traffic and facilities its smooth uninterrupted
passage over natural/manmade barriers like rivers, cracks, railways, roads etc. by transmitting the loads
and forces coming over it to the foundation through the bearings and superstructure.
Consistent with economy and local availability of the materials, labour and technology for a particular type
of superstructure selections may have to be made out of the following options.
a. Masonry
b. Reinforced cement concrete
c. Prestressed concrete
d. Steel
e. Composite construction which is a combination of any of the above.
In Plain areas, Road Subgrade elevation in fill sections is so fixed the difference between the formation
level (top of subgrade) and highest water table / highest flood level is not less than 0.6 to 1 m and
between formation level and ground level not less than 1 m
In Cut and Fill sections and hill roads where it may be difficult to satisfy the said 0.6 to 1 m criteria, drains
may be provided to lower down the water table.
In the rural roads, the following compositions followed as a common practice in Jharkhand State:
Prime Coat
Tack Coat
Premix
Seal Coat
The altogether thickness can be assumed as 350 mm.
Taking camber as 2.5 %, the difference in level between formation level at center and formation level at
edge of carriageway for 7.5 m carriageway comes as 94 mm.
Thus the minimum height at center of carriageway from the HFL can be taken as 2175+100+1500=
3775mm.
Therefore, the minimum height at center of carriageway from HFL is taken as 3.775 m in the Present case.
The Bridge sites undertaken for construction are selected at the Government Level and the Consultants
have no role in selection of alignment. The site selected has normally earthen or metallic road where there
is no traffic movement. In most of the cases, the available land width is insufficient even to accommodate
the abutment width of 8.45m. The connecting approach does not have any geometry in accordance with
the provisions of the Road Design Standards. There is no provision for land acquisition too. In such
situation, the design of road geometrics has no significance, as the road has to follow within the available
land width only.
However, the design has been done based upon the given criteria as illustrated below:
3.12 Design Speed:
Choice of Design Speed depends on the function of road and also terrain conditions. It is basic parameter
which determines all other geometric design features. Design speed for various classes of roads is given in
table shown below (taken from IRC SP: 20- 2002).
Rural Roads
50 40 40 35 25 20 20 20
(ODR and VR)
The design speed is also dependent on the radius of horizontal curve. The maximum permissible
Superelevation considered for plain and rolling terrain is 7%, while for hilly terrain it is 10%. The
coefficient of tyre friction with road way is considered as 0.15
Thus the relationship between the velocity of vehicle (in Kmph) and permissible Radius of Horizontal
Curve is V2/127R = 0.22 for Plain & rolling terrain.
And V2/127R = 0.25 for hilly terrain.
3.13 Permissible Gradient:
Indian Road Congress has laid down standard for gradient to be adopted in different terrains. Gradient for
different Terrains (as taken from IRC SP 20-2002) are given below.
3.3% 5% 6%
1 Plain or Rolling Terrain
(1 in 30) (1 in 20) (1 in 16.7)
Hence, for Plain Terrain desirable (Limiting) gradient as per above table shall be 2.5% (1 in 40).
The amount by which the gradient should be eased to offset the extra tractive force involved at horizontal
curves is known as ‘grade compensation’. This should be calculated by following formula (taken from IRC:
38-1988)
The above extra widening has been proposed considering lane width of 3.75m. In our case, the lane width
is taken as 7.5m, which is 2 lane.
Hence extra widening of carriageway width at curve is taken as 0.6m, which is applied equally on both
sides of carriageway.
3.16 Camber:
Generally, undivided roads on straight should be provided with a crown in the middle and surface on
either side sloping towards edge. However on hill roads this may not be possible. Camber values for
different Road surface types should be recommended from Table 2.11 of IRC SP: 20-2002, which is shown
below:
Camber (Percentage)
Surface Type Low Rainfall ( Annual High Rainfall ( Annual Rainfall >
Rainfall<1000 mm) 1000 mm)
From the above table, for the camber for bridge portion is taken as 2.5% and the same is followed for
approach road which is only 100 m in Basbariya side and 100 m in Samlapur side.
3.17 Horizontal Curve:
On Horizontal curve, the centrifugal force is balanced by the combined effects of Superelevation and side
friction. So, from clause 9.4.1 of IRC 73-1980 the basic equation for this condition of equilibrium follow
as:
Or,
Where,
v = vehicle speed in meter per second
V = vehicle speed in Kmph
g = acceleration due to gravity in m/sec²
e = Superelevation ratio in meter per meter
f = coefficient of side friction between vehicle tyres and pavement (taken as 0.15)
R = Radius of curvature in meter
For Rolling and Plain terrain, the maximum value of e shall be 0.07
Hence, for Plain & Rolling terrain,
Thus,
But the value of Radius calculated above must not be less than the minimum permissible radius. Table
below from clause 9.4 of IRC 73 -1980 shows the minimum radius of horizontal curve for different terrain
conditions.
Note: Absolute minimum and ruling minimum radii corresponds to minimum design speed and ruling
design speed.
As per clause 4.4.3 of IRC: 38-1988, the minimum radius of curve shall not be less than 26.0m, where
truck also ply on road.
However, the minimum radius of curve of 15.0m for design speed of 20 Kmph cam be provided as per
Table 3 of IRC: 38-1988.
3.18 Element of Circular Curve as given in GAD:
T.P.: This Point denotes the start of transition curve. In the present case, since transition curve has not
been provided, it represents the starting chainage of circular curve.
P.T.: This Point denotes the end of transition curve. In the present case, since transition curve has not
been provided, it represents the end chainage of circular curve.
Δ: Deflection angle of curve = (180 X L)/ (π X R)
Ts: Tangent Distance = R tan (Δ/2)
Es: Apex Distance = R [sec (Δ/2)-1]
Lc: Length of Circular Curve
Rc: Radius of Circular Curve
3.19 Superelevation:
Superelevation required on horizontal curves should be calculated from following formula. This assumes
that centrifugal force corresponding to 75% the design speed is balanced by superelevation and rest
counteracted by side friction.
Where,
e = Superelevation in meter per meter
V = Speed in Km/h
R = Radius in meter
In the present case, the design velocity has been computed using superelevation rate of 7%, using the
above formula and taking 75% Design velocity as 80.0 Kmph, e comes as 6.8%. Hence we have adopted
e as 7%. The superelevation shall be provided by the way increasing or decreasing the height of pedestal
below the superstructure.
The following Table (as per clause 5.3 of IRC 38-1988) describes the radii of horizontal curves for different
camber rates beyond which no superelevation is required.
Due to Changes in grade in the vertical alignment of the highway vertical curves at the intersection of the
different grades will be provided in the design so as to smoothen the vertical profile resulting in easing off
the changes in the gradients for the fast moving vehicles. Both summit curves and valley curves will be
introduced as per clause 2.11.3 of IRC SP: 20-2002.
The minimum length of vertical curve (as per Table-20 of IRC SP: 20-2002) is given here:
Design Speed upto (in Maximum Gradient Changes not Minimum Length of Curve (in
Kmph) requiring Vertical curves (in %) meter)
35 1.5 15
40 1.2 20
50 1.0 30
The length of summit curve and valley curves (L) is guided by & the sight distance and the deviation angle
(N). The sight Distance as per clause 2.9 of IRC SP: 20-2002 is given below:
Sight Distance (meter)
Speed (kmph)
Stopping Intermediate Stopping
20 20 40 -
25 25 50 -
30 30 60 -
35 40 80 -
40 45 90 165
50 60 120 235
The formula for determination of Length of Curve as given in IRC SP: 23-1993 has been presented here,
b. When the length of the curve is less than the sight distance
b. When the length of the curve is less than the sight distance
Where,
N= Deviation angle
L= Length of Vertical Curves
S= Stopping Sight Distance
Here, a is the algebraic difference in grade expressed in percentage
Equation of Vertical Curve can be expressed as:
y=x²/a
Where, y= ordinate of vertical curve at a distance of x
And a=a constant = 2L/N; L & N is defined as earlier
Thus maximum difference between horizontal and apex of curve at middle can be expressed as
m=L²/8R or LN/8 (SP: 20-2002)
3.21 Minimum length of approach where no curve is provided:
As per clause 120.1 of IRC: 5-1998, the minimum length of approach which should be provided in straight
reach beyond bridge is 15m.
3.22 Approach Road Protection:
Nature of protection to be provided can be divided into the following broad categories
3.23 Approach Embankments subjected to flooding but where the velocity of flow is
insignificant (not exceeding 1m/s) to cause Erosion.
These cases occur where river flows flat terrain with large spills. The thickness of slope pitching, size of
stone, its gradation and filter design have been worked out as per para 5.3 of IRC 89-1997. However, the
designed value arrived at should not fall below those indicated in figure 8.1(A) or 8.1(B). The length of
approach should begin and end at a stable section on the approach subject to a minimum of 15 m.
3.24 Approach Embankments which are under direct and frontal attack of river flow or
otherwise subjected to velocity of flow exceeding 1 m/s.
These cases occur where the flow is confined within banks during ordinary floods but spills during high
floods without meandering.
3.25 Approaches to bridges located in the bed of meandering rivers with the large khadir
width requiring guide bunds.
These cases pertained to river which meander in alluvial plains and have large khadir widths even under
ordinary flood conditions.
3.26 Design criteria as per para 5.3 are as follows
Free Board:
The free board to the top of approach protection above the water level is generally kept at 1.5m to 1.8m.
Side slope of the road protection may be determined from consideration of slope stability of embankments
and from hydraulic gradient consideration. Generally a side slope of 2(H):1(V) is adopted predominantly
cohesionless materials. (Here 1.5H: 1V is adopted, keeping in view of land availability).

4.0 45 126 35 59
4.5 57 257 44 118
5.0 71 497 54 218
3.30 Thickness of Pitching:
t= 0.06*Q 1/3
Where, Q= design discharge in m3/s
The thickness of stone pitching computed from the above formula shall be subject to an upper limit of 1m
and lower limit of 0.3 m.
3.31 Shape of Stones:
Quarry stones are preferable to round stones as the later roll off easily. Angular stone fit into each other
better and have well inter – locking characteristics.
3.32 Placing of Stones:
The pattern of laying shall be such that the joints are broken and the voids are minimum by packing with
spalls wherever necessary and the top surface is as smooth as possible.
3.33 Filter Design:
Filter shall consist of sound gravel, stone, jhama (overburnt) brick ballast and coarse sand. The filter may
be provided in one or more layers satisfying the following criteria:
In the foregoing, D15 means the size of that sieve which allows 15% by weight of the filter material to
pass through it and similar is the meaning of D50 and D85.
3.34 Toe Protection:
Launching apron shall be provided for the protection of toe and it shall form a continuous flexible cover
over the slope of the possible scour hole in continuation of pitching upto the point of deepest scour. The
size of the stone required for launching apron to resist mean design velocity is given by the formula:
v = 4.893 * (d) ½,
Where v = mean design velocity in m/s.
d= equivalent diameter of stone in meter.
For Velocities upto 5 m/s, the size and the weight of stone is also given in the table 5.2 of IRC 89- 1997
which is given below.

3.5 51 184
4.0 67 417
4.5 85 852

However, considering that this scheme is bridge project and construction of road shall follow once after
completion of bridge, and the huge cost is involved in the protection work in accordance with the codal
provision, only 600mm thickness boulder pitching has been provided for approach road which are under
influence of HFL, and a side slope of 1.5H: 1V has been provided for scarcity of land availability.
Based upon the above methodology, a general Arrangement Drawing (GAD) is prepared showing the
Formation level, Soffit Level, HFL, Ground level, Span arrangement, Length of Bridge, Type of Foundation.
Based upon the standard method of computing volume, quantity estimation of different components of the
bridge has been done. The finished rate of items has been taken from the SOR of Road Construction
department (Including National Highway Wing), Govt. of Jharkhand and cost of the bridge has been
worked out.
