Warm-Up
The Language of Algebra
What would the Algebraic
expression/equation/inequality be?

1. In 20 years, Tracy will be 5 years greater than twice her current

age.

2. George ran 4 kilometers more than Lenny. Express in meters.

3. The square of a number is greater than one-tenth of the number.

4. Maria is at least 10 years older than Nadine.

The Language of Algebra
1. In 20 years, Tracy will be 5 years greater than twice her
current age.
Let Tracy’s current age be: x
Then in 20 years her age would be: 20+x
Equal to 5 years greater than twice her current age: 5+ 2x
So:
x+20=5+2x

2. George ran 4 kilometers more than Lenny. Express in meters:
Let:4 kilometers = 4000m; G=meters ran by George ;
L= meters ran by Lenny
G+4000m=L
3. The square of a number is greater than one-tenth of the number.
Let: n=a number then:
n^2 > (1/10) n
4. Maria is at least 10 years older than Nadine.
Let M=Maria’s age and N=Nadine’s age then:
M≥10+N

Morphemes
Derivational Morphemes
● The smallest meaningful Affixes which changes the meaning
unit of a word that cannot and functions of a root word
be further reduced. ● Creates a new word
● A word or part of a word ● Can changes part of speech

Inflectional Morphemes
Affixes used to change some aspect of
the part of speech
● E.g: if word is singular or plural
● But never changes part of speech

angles of 2 nonagons?

Derivational affixes:

What is the expression for finding the combined
angles of 2 nonagons?

Derivational prefix: ‘non’ = 9

Inflectional suffix: ‘s’ = plural nonagons

Practice with Morphemes
What is the expression for finding the combined
angles of 2 nonagons?
Derivational: non’ = 9 Inflectional: ‘s’ = plural shapes

Expression for the angle of a polygon:

180(n-2); n=9
180(9-2) = 180(7)
For the angles of 2 nonagons: 2(180x7)

result is 19. What is the equation that represents
this statement?
Derivational prefix: ‘sub’
Base Word: ‘tract’ Subtracted
Inflectional suffix: ‘ed’

result is 19. What is the equation that represents
this statement?
Derivational prefix: ‘sub’ Subtract = minus = “ - “
Derivational suffix: ‘tract’
Inflectional suffix: ‘ed’ => past tense

this statement?
Derivational prefix: ‘sub’ Subtract = minus = “ - “
Derivational suffix: ‘tract’
Inflectional suffix: ‘ed’ => past tense
Let n=a number
Then 3 times a number = 3n
8 subtracted from = - 8
So: 3n-8=19
