• Two very unique and diverse countries....
• Only really discovered by western explorers in the 16th
to 18th centuries
• Tourism is growing rapidly in both countries and
generally across Asia/ Pacific
– Both still members of the commonwealth but are
parliamentary democracies
– Australia - Pop. 22 million (est.)
• Largest city – Sydney Pop. 4 ½ million (est.)
– Canberra is the nations capital
– New Zealand – Pop. 4,300,000
• Largest City – Auckland Pop. 1.4 million (31% of the countries
pop.)
– Wellington is the nations capital

• Climate
– Seasons are the opposite to Europe
• December to February is high tourist season
– Australia generally warmer than New Zealand. NZ
north island warmer than south island
– Melbourne and Sydney very warm summer and
cool dry winter....
• Cairns and Darwin are almost tropical in climate (similar
to Florida or Mexico)

• Worlds smallest continent but a vast country..
• Most trips from one region to another require
air travel, e.g. Sydney- Perth 4/5 hours
– Numerous internal airlines e.g. Qantas
– Also, car rental, and good bus and rail routes
• New Zealand has similar options but as it’s far
smaller, driving is a more realistic option
