INTRODUCTION TO ICT
Answer the following questions:
Question No 1: How are computer technologies being used to train surgeons?
Answer: Surgeons now can use robotic surgical devices to perform delicate operations, and even to
conduct surgeries remotely. New virtual-reality technologies are being used to train new surgeons in
cutting-edge techniques, without cutting an actual patient. Computers control diagnostic machinery
in hospitals. A computer analyses the data from diagnostic machinery and diagnose the problem.
For instance: the images from the MRI scan are unintelligible until they have been processed by a
computer.
Question No 2: Explain a few of the different ways in which computers can be categorized?
Answer: Computers can be categorized in several ways. For example, some computers are
designed for use by one person, some are meant by to be used by groups of people, and some are
not used by people at all. They can also be categorized by their power, which means the speed at
which they operate and the types of the task they can handle.
Question No 3: Why are mainframe systems usually limited in the number of tasks they
perform?

Answer: Mainframes are large, powerful systems. The largest mainframes can handle the
processing needs of thousands of users at any given moment. But what these systems offer in
power, they lack in flexibility. Most mainframe systems are designed to handle only a specific set of
tasks. By limiting the number of tasks the system must perform, administration must preserve as
much power as possible for required operations.

Question No 4: What does the term dragging means and how do you do it?

Answer: Dragging an item means positioning the mouse pointer over the item, pressing the primary
mouse button, and holding it down as you move the mouse. As you move the pointer, the item is
‘’dragged’’ along with it across the screen. This technique is also called drag-and-drop editing, or just
drags and drop. Dragging is a very handy tool. For example, In a word processing program, you can
drag text from one location to another in a document.

Question No 5: What happens when you press a key on the computer's keyboard?

Answer: When you press a key, a tiny chip called the keyboard controller notes that a key has been
pressed. The keyboard controller places a code into parts of its memory called the keyboard buffer, to
indicate which key was pressed. The keyboard controller then sends a signal to the computer’s
system software. The system software then passes that code to the CPU.

Question No 6: What two capabilities does speech-recognition software give you?

Answer: Translating voice into text is a capability known as Speech-recognition (or voice
recognition). With it you can dictate to the computer instead of typing, and you can control the
computer with simple commands, such as Open or Cancel.
Speech-recognition software takes the smallest individual sounds in a language, called phonemes,
and translates them into text or commands.

Question No 7: How does digital light processing (DLP) technology work?

Answer: Newer models use digital light processing (DLP) technology to project brighter crisper
images. DLP devices use a special microchip called a digital micro mirror device, which actually uses
mirrors to control the image display. Unlike LCD based projectors, DLP units can display clear images
in normal lighting conditions.

Question No 8: List the four factors you should consider when comparing monitors.

Answer: The following are the most important factors you should consider when comparing monitors:

 Size
 Resolution
 Refresh rate
 Dot pitch

Question No 9: If a printer is said to have a resolution of 600 dpi, what does this mean?

Answer: Image quality, also known as print resolution, is usually measured in dots per inch (dpi). If
a printer’s resolution is 600 dpi, this means it can print 600 columns of dots and 600 rows of dots in
each square of the page, a total of 360,000 dots (600x600=360,000) per inch.

Question No 10: Why is it important to have a standard text code?

Answer: Early programmers realized that they needed a standard text code that was agreeable to all
of them. In such a system, numbers would represent the letters of the alphabet, punctuation marks,
and other symbols. This standard code system would enable any programmer or program to use the
same individual pieces of data. The four most popular code systems invented are the following:

 EBCDIC
 ASCII
 EXTENDED ASCII
 UNICODE
