NCMP109: DEONTOLOGYAND TELEOLOGY 1

Sarto, Andro Ramon M., RR22

Deontology is an ethical theory that uses rules to distinguish right and wrong. It is
also often associated with autonomy, justice and goodness. It just requires following
rules and doing their duty – as a nurse, I must rely on my natural intuition about what is
and what is not ethical. I must stick with my principle that I must covet any misconduct
by lying about something, snitching information or even leaking it. Even though it can
produce results which are somehow unacceptable, I have to avoid subjectivity and
uncertainty since I must follow rules. In the aspect of Teleology, we should consider
everything of all sides that they are considered good. Decision making that involves the
nursing practice gas a utilitarian moral justification if it produces good consequences
for care of patients and is beneficial for the care of future patients. Teleology provides
guidance, but it does not guarantee agreement. These two have flaws, mainly taken
too far by individuals. People also have different definitions of “greatest good”.
