MOHR’s CIRCLE FOR STRAIN ROSSETE

Let suppose a Generic Strain Rosette is comprised of three

strain gauges εa , εb and εc with α and β are the angles
between them.
Assuming,
εa > εc > εb

Steps to Construct a Mohr’s Circle for Strain Rosette
1. Set up the vertical axis to represent ε = 0 which is also
the γ/2 axis.
2. Draw 3 parallel lines to the γ/2 axis at the appropriate
distances representing the values (+ve or -ve) of εa , εb
and εc.
3. On the middle line of these three (which is the εc line
for this case), mark a point P representing the origin of
the rosette.
4. Draw the rosette configuration at point P with gauge C
(for this case) in line with the εc line at Q and R.
5. Construct perpendicular bisectors of PQ and PR.
Where these intersect is the center of the strain Mohr’s
circle, O.

Steps to Construct a Mohr’s Circle for Strain Rosette
6. Draw the circle on this center, which of course should
pass through points P, Q and R. Insert the x-axis
passing through O and this is the ε- axis.
7. Join O to Q, R and S; where S is the opposite point of
P on the circle.
8. Lines OQ, OR and OS represents the 3 gauges on the
circle where 2α and 2β are the angles between the
gauges.
9. From the circle, read off the required strain values e.g.
ε1, ε2, γ1, γ2 and εγmax.
10. εx, εy, γxy can also be found by considering the
appropriate angle (2θ) from gauge a.

Example with Solution

εx = -500,
εy = 300,
γxy = 600 µm/m.

SAMPLE PROBLEM 7.7:
(Mech. of Materials by Beer and Johnston)
Using a 60o rosette, the following strains have been
determined at point Q on the surface of a steel machine base:
ϵ1 = 40 (μ), ϵ2 = 980 (μ), ϵ3 = 330 (μ),
Using the coordinate axes shown, determine at point Q.
a) the strain components ϵx , ϵy
and γxy.
b) the principal strains
c) the maximum shearing
strain
d) Plot the deformed element
on neat sketch
