Sultones and Sultams Rule C-671

671.1 - Compounds containing a group -SO2-O- as part of a ring are named as described
in Rule C-472.3 forlactones but with the ending "-sultone" in place of "-carbolactone".
The -SO2- group has priority over the -O- atom for lowest available number.

Examples to Rule C-671.1

671.2 - Compounds containing a group -SO2-N< as part of a ring are named by adding "-
sultam" to the name of the hydrocarbon with the same number of carbon atoms. The -
SO2- group has priority over the -NH- group for lowest available number.

Example to Rule C-671.2

671.3 - Sultones and sultams may alternatively be named as heterocyclic compounds by

the rules of Section B, the oxygen attached to sulfur being denoted as "dioxide", with a
locant.
