Section A: Practical
Aim
• To explore how the summation of force affects the distance a tennis ball is thrown

Equipment
• Tennis ball
• Measuring tape
• Recording sheet and pen

Method
1. Roll out the tape measurer from the wall in a straight line.
2. Have the first participant sit against the wall (as per the first trial condition). The other participant needs to
stand out in the field ready to watch where the tennis ball lands.
3. The first participant will throw the ball and the second participant will measure from where the tennis ball
lands and record in the table below.
4. Repeat the same trial condition, swapping roles.
5. Repeat for each trial condition stated below. Make sure the tape measure is moved to the correct start
position for each trial to ensure you are measuring the total distance the ball has travelled.

Questions

1. Describe summation of force

(1 mark)

2. Which trial condition produced the

greatest distance? Give reasons for this
(2 marks)

3. What are three principles of

summation of force?
(3 marks)

4. Draw the graph representing the

effect of summation of force using
‘force’ as the y-axis variable and
‘timing’ as the x-axis variable. Use
the categories ‘too late’, ‘too early’
and ‘well timed’.
