John Cunnison Catford was a Scottish linguist and phonetician.
J. C. Catford published a book ‘A Linguistic Theory of Translation’ in 1965. It
deals with the analysis and description of translation process. He follows
Firthian and Hallidayan linguistic model of translation. According to him,
the theory of translation is a branch of comparative Linguistics since it deals
with certain type of relation between languages. It is essentially a theory of
Applied Linguistics.
