LPS800-UM-INST-03 4-3
Chapter 4: Unit Installation July 20, 2005

Air Flow Guidelines

To ensure adequate airflow through the LPS-800 chassis, it is recommended that you maintain a clearance of at
least 6 inches (15.2 cm) in the front and back of the chassis at all times.

If airflow through the chassis is blocked or restricted, or if the ambient air drawn into the chassis is too warm, an
over-temperature condition within the chassis can occur.

The site where the chassis is installed should also be as dust-free as possible. Dust tends to clog the shelves,
reducing the flow of cooling air through the chassis and increasing the risk of an over-temperature condition.

Air Filter Cleaning Guidelines

Remove and vacuum the air filter at least once every two weeks (more often in unusually dusty environments). You
can also wash the filter in running water, but ensure that it is completely dry before replacing it in the LPS-800
chassis. Have spares on hand in case the filter tears or becomes worn, or if you have to remove to wash it. A dirty
filter could restrict the flow of cooling air into the LPS-800 chassis and could cause an over-temperature condition.

CAUTION Never place a wet filter in the LPS-800 chassis; the moisture drawn into the chassis can damage
the equipment.

Unit Installation

CAUTION Always wear an ESD wrist strap when performing any operations to the LPS-800. Plug the wrist
strap cable into the ESD jack located on the faceplate of the fan tray assembly.

WARNING
When no fiber-optic cable is connected, invisible laser radiation can be emitted from the optical
interfaces on the optical units. Do not stare into an open interface. To avoid exposure to laser
radiation, use a dust plug to cover the optical interface.

CAUTION Please insert the unit slowly and gently. Forcing the unit into place can damage the connectors
on the rear of the unit and/or the pins on the backplane of the chassis. Be sure that the connectors
on the rear of the unit plug into the corresponding pins on the backplane.

Note: The procedure for installing all front slot units is the same.

CABLE ROUTING
This chapter describes how to route cables to and from the LoopStar 8xx chassis. The following sections are
contained in this chapter:
• LPS-800 Cable Routing
• LPS-810 Cable Routing and Cover Installation

LPS-800 CABLE ROUTING

Note: Route cables according to local site practices.

CAUTION Avoid excessive stretching or bending of the cables. A proper bend radius prevents damage to
the fiber cable.

Cable Guides
The cable guide assembly is attached to the side of the LPS-800 chassis. The cable guides ensure that the proper
bend radius is maintained for the fiber-optic cables ensuring that they are properly routed. To remove the fixed cable
guides, take out the screws that anchor them to the side of the chassis.

Cable Routing

Note: When replacing a unit, leave enough slack in the cables on both the front and rear of the chassis.

From the front access, route all the cables to the right side. Figure 7-1, for example, shows how the fiber-optic cable
is routed out the right rear access through the cable guide and up the rack post.

Figure 7-1. Route the fiber-optic cable

From the rear access, route the left side cables out the left side, and route the right side cables out the right side.
Figure 7-2, for example, shows how the DS1 cable is routed out of both the left and right rear access.

LPS-810 CABLE ROUTING AND COVER INSTALLATION

Note: Please route the cables according to local site practices.

CAUTION Do not bend the fiber cable excessively. A proper bend radius prevents damage to the fiber cable.

Cable Guide
The cable guides ensure that the proper bend radius is maintained in the fibers and all other cables are properly
routed.

Below the unit area, there is a cable guide and management area. The cables (fiber, Ethernet, and serial Craft)
running out of units should be routed through this area.

There are two mounting holes for fiber guides on both sides of LPS-810 chassis (see Figure 7-3). The fiber guides
are shipped with LPS-810 chassis. Install them, if necessary.
