Relationship between language, culture and identity:

According to Lanehart (1996), “language is a part of one’s culture and identity”.

Lanehart explains the connection between language and identity and how they are
related with each other. She claims that “our identities emerge from our
transaction” which is developed within a culture. There is a significant connection
between language and identity formation. Language and culture are linked together
and not only connected with each other but also dependent upon each other.
Language is formed by the culture and culture is influenced and impacted by the
Language. It is not possible for a person to learn the culture without a language.
Culture is transmitted and expressed through Language effectively and completely.
In other words, Language and culture are inseparable and language cannot exist
without culture.

While, Identity is also formed, influenced and impacted by the language and
the culture because culture is the name of a set of beliefs, customs and traditions
and culture is learnt and expressed through language so both language and culture
has power to form and influence identity. Language is a crucial means of
communication and interaction. Language not only reflects and expresses facts and
observation but it also influences attitudes and behaviors. Language and culture
shapes one’s identity and personality. According to Freire and Macedo, “language
should never be understood as a mere tool of communication” (1987). Without
doubt, language plays a significant role in the formation of cultural identity. It also
acts as a tool to unite the people in one cultural community that share the same
collective identity. We often do not realize how much language has impacted our
life. So, it is important for us to value our language because it carries our cultural,
historical, social and national identity. Without a language, one will lose its own
identity. So, Language is a powerful instrument of identity and belonging.
Language, culture and identity are dynamic, complex and ongoing processes.
