Q4 – CPT #2 - Converging/Convex Lenses Activity- Online Edition

Introduction

Using the online simulator, you will create images of a lightbulb produced by concave and convex lens. You will make
predictions about the characteristics of the images and then compare your predictions to the results inside the
simulator.

Initial Setup of Simulator

1. Go to https://www.explorelearning.com/
2. Log in with the credentials you have saved for this site.
4. Launch the simulation or “Gizmo” called “Ray Tracing- Lenses”.

Explore the Features of the Simulator

• Change the type of lens using the drop-down menu in the bottom right-hand corner.
• Change the focal length “f” of the lens by dragging the blue dot closer to or further from the lens.
• Adjust the height of the object (candle) by dragging the flame up or down.
• Move the object (candle) around and observe where the image appears.
• Different rays may be switched on/off using the check boxes at the bottom of the simulator.
• The ruler can be activated by clicking the “show ruler” check box. Drag the ends of the ruler to any position on
the screen to obtain the distance between any pair of locations on the screen.
• The camera icon in the top right corner will allow you to take screenshots of your work. (Note: The object and
image must be visible in ALL screenshots)

Part One - Concave Lens:

Set-up – Concave Lens

1. Change the type of lens to “Concave” using the drop-down menu in
the bottom right-hand corner.
2. Change the focal length “f” of the lens to -25 cm by dragging the
blue dot so that it is 25 cm from the lens

3. The camera icon in the top right corner will allow you to take screenshots of your work.
Do distance of the object to the lens
Question #1:
If the focal length of a concave/diverging lens is 25 cm, what “dO” location would result in a smaller, upright, virtual
image? Any "do" location would result to a smaller upright virtual image thus the "do" could be placed anywhere
because its concave lense 18.6cm
A. Write the value of you’re dO here ________________

Use the camera icon in the top right corner to take a screenshot of your work. (Note: The object and image must be
visible in ALL screenshots)

B. Insert the screenshot into the space below:

Part Two - Convex Lens:

Set-up – Convex Lens

1. Change the type of lens to “Convex” using the drop-down menu in the
bottom right-hand corner.
2. Change the focal length “f” of the lens to -10 cm by dragging the blue
dot so that it is 10 cm from the lens.

3. The camera icon in the top right corner will allow you to take screenshots of your work. (Note: The object and
image must be visible in ALL screenshots)

Question #2:

If the focal length of a converging lens is 10 cm, what “dO” location would result in a larger, upright, virtual image?
7.2 cm
A. Write the value of you’re dO here ________________

object between F and lens

Use the camera icon in the top right corner to take a screenshot of your work. (Note: The object and image must be
visible in ALL screenshots)

B. Insert the screenshot into the space below:

Part Three - Convex Lens:

Set-up – Convex Lens

1. Change the type of lens to “Convex” using the drop-down menu in the
bottom right-hand corner.
2. Change the focal length “f” of the lens to -15 cm by dragging the blue
dot so that it is 15 cm from the lens.

3. The camera icon in the top right corner will allow you to take screenshots of your work.

Question #3:

If the focal length of a converging lens is 15 cm, what “dO” location would result in a larger, real image?

20.5
A. Write the value of you’re dO here ________________ object between 2F and F
object would have to be placed far back to come to an upright
image
Use the camera icon in the top right corner to take a screenshot of your work. (Note: The object and image must be
visible in ALL screenshots)

B. Insert the screenshot into the space below:

C. Use the following thin lens equation to calculate where the

image will appear by calculating a predicted value for di.

Show ALL work for each step of the calculation below.

f=15
do=20.5
di=55.90
magnified= 2.727
D. Use the simulation to test the precision of your work. Use the ruler to measure the following values:

38.4
di: _______ 9.9
ho: _______ N/A
hi: ________

Hint: The ruler can be activated by clicking the “show ruler” check box. Drag the ends of the ruler to any position on the
screen to obtain the distance between any pair of locations on the screen.

Insert screenshots for each measure value (total of 3 below). (Note: The object and image must be visible in
ALL screenshots)

i. Screenshot of measured di

image is all the way at bottom cant reach

ii. Screenshot of measured ho

iii. Screenshot of measured hi

image is at bottom cant be measured
