PANCREAS DIVISUM
Overview & Facts

Pancreas divisum is a most widely recognized inconsistency of the pancreas that occurs from birth.
Usually, the life of a human embryo begins in the pancreas particularly in dorsal and ventral tube. The
tubes are combined during the development period but, if the other tube failed to combined with the
other, pancreas divisum do occurs.

Types & Symptoms

SYMPTOMS

There is no indication to some patient if they have this condition; however, it is mostly recognized
during autopsy.

Some of the patient may experience symptoms while developing the condition. The symptoms include
the following:

Abdominal pain

Nausea

Vomiting

Acute or chronic pancreatitis

Diagnosis & Medications

TREATMENT

If the symptoms are not visible or experienced, treatment is not needed. For the patients who have
symptoms and indication of the condition, medications can be a little bit crucial.

Some doctors may suggest:

Puestow procedure or sphincterotomy. A procedure wherein minor papilla is removed to enable the
normal process of the digestive juices. In this procedure, a tool called stent is inserted so that it won’t
create a clot. Since every surgery contains a risk, you are free to ask your doctor on what to expect in
Puestow procedure.

Pancreas divisum diet. Adjusting your diet can help prevent and lower the risk of developing the
symptoms. Your diet may include:

Fasting- by controlling your food intake can help the swollen pancreas. The fasting can last in short
period of time and begin with a small amount depending on what amount you can tolerate the process.
You can ask for a dietary plan. Normally, the doctors may suggest soft foods as part of the fasting or you
can include the following in your diet:

Energy drinks

Apple and white grape juice

Chicken or beef broth

Water

Gelatin

Lessen the fatty foods- the fatty foods needed by the body depends to the weigh and height of an
individual but the usual fat intake should not exceed in 30%. There are foods that can give low fat such
as turkey, boneless, fish and chicken breast.

Avoid alcoholic beverages- beverages with alcohol content can be one of the factors that affect your
pancreas. Doctors are often advised the patients to quit drinking alcoholic drinks instead they can drink
water to keep their body hydrated.
