ANALYSIS OF THE PAVEMENT SYSTEM AT STANDARD AXLE LOADING

6.1. The pavement system under analysis is characterized by thickness of each road layer and
the deformability characteristics of the road layer materials and the subgrade (the dynamic
modulus of elasticity, E, in MPa and Poisson’s coefficient, ).
6.2. The design value of the deformability characteristics of the road pavement support
materials are determined as follows:
6.2.1. In case no capping layer is provided, the deformability characteristics are those
corresponding to earthwork materials, according to stipulations of chapter 4.
6.2.2. In case a capping layer is provided, the equivalent dynamic modulus of elasticity of the
two-layered system (capping layer – earthwork materials), depending on capping layer type,
its thickness and the value of the dynamic modulus of elasticity of the subgrade, by means of
figure 2 …6.
6.2.3. The design value of the Poisson’s coefficient is that corresponding to upper layer of the
earthworks or capping layer.
6.3. The deformability characteristics of the ballast or existing paving materials are
determined as follows:
- the design value of the dynamic modulus of elasticity depends on that of support layer
material (Ep) and is computed with relation (3);
- Poisson’s coefficient has value of 0.27;
6.4. The design values of the dynamic modulus of elasticity and of the Poisson’s coefficient
for non-cohesive materials of the road base materials and sub-base are determined according
to table 7.
6.5. The design values of the dynamic modulus of elasticity and of the Poisson’s coefficient
for natural aggregates stabilized with hydraulic and pozzolan binders of the road base
materials and sub-base are determined according to table 8.
6.6. The design values of the dynamic modulus of elasticity and of the Poisson’s coefficient
of the asphalt mix of the road base materials and bituminous pavement layers are determined
according to table 9.
6.7. In case the asphalt mix make up of a layer is found to be different from that of legal in
force stipulations, according to table 9, the values of the dynamic modulus of elasticity should
be determined with the complex equipment for dynamic loading of the asphalt mix, according
to the technical instructions concerning the dynamic modulus of elasticity of the asphalt mix,
indicative AND 542.
